Chaning Axle Joint..Anybody know how?
Ok I got a bad axle joint, and I need to fix it fast. Can anyone give me a step by step? Is it easy is it hard? Please let me know. Oh by the way its a 96 accord lx.
It's not the easiest thing in the world to do. Here's what I have to do on my 92, yours may differ slightly. You will definitely need a torque wrench to torque things back to spec afterwards. Other necessary equipment includes an impact wrench or 1/2" breaker bar, axle nut socket, various sockets/wrenches. I consider an impact wrench or a 1/2" breaker bar MANDATORY for this job. There's just too many large nuts/bolts to be done:
- Undo axle nut. It takes a LOT of force to get it off, it's torqued to 180 ft-lbs. With corrosion it could be worse. You'll likely need either an impact, or a 1/2" or 3/4" breaker bar with a cheater bar. Unstake it first, then loosen and remove. 36 mm nut on the 92s at least.
- Undo the radius rod to LCA bolts, sway bar bushings, strut to LCA, and LCA to frame. You can pop the lower ball joint if you really want to and avoid part of this, but popping the ball joint is worse IMHO. Some of these bolts are a major PITA, especially lining up some of them afterwards. Someone here posted once that the top part of the suspension could be undone, but I don't remember exactly what.
- Pry the axle out of the diff or halfshaft. I used a prybar/crowbar to pop it out, took a bit of effort.
- Swing knuckle out, remove axle.
- Fix axle/replace.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Popping the axle back in is also a PITA, I had to brace my feet against the side of my garage and push hard.
