Default Take a look at my first attempt at sub box building

So today I'm sitting here browsing HT in the usual forums with nothing to do, and I decide to build myself a sub box. My friend lended me an amp, and a 8" Resonant Engineering sub. I picked up a big *** sheet of MDF, some spray paint, and other building accesories. I spent about 20 bucks to do everything.

I don't know the specs on this amp. I believe its a Profile, and my friend said it put out around 410 rms.

Here's the wood..

The beginning of the box

Here's what it looks like after cutting and some house building.

Mickey Mouse!

Flower? What the hell, hahah

Finally, the finished product. We're Golden.

The paint doesn't look great, but I'll be damned it sounds nice.

not bad. The last time i made my own box, there was saw dust everywhere on the garage floor. Also, my car smelt like the lumber section of Home Depot for months.

Hahah yeah that was only the preliminary dust. There was dust everywhere when I finished the box at my friend's house. Man all the fumes from the soldering and spray paint, and the saw dust has given me a headache.

I remember my first boxes. I was so poor(20 years old), that all I had was a jigsaw. Hammer, nails and glue. They worked well though.

Now it is time to start building your wood working tool set.

If you are going to stick with circular saw, get a set of 4 foot aluminum guides(~$20). The set I have came with small clamps. Obviously this will allow you to make long straight cuts. I am assuming that you went freehand. The edges look very rough. Maybe you need the plywood blade for your saw.

Then second thing I would buy is a pair of corner clamps(~$20 for pair).

Get either:
Jigsaw & compass to scribe perfect circles. (my least favorite, but cheapest option)
Router & buy, or build diy circle jig
Rotozip and circle jig (I bought a rotozip 6 months ago but have not used it yet)

The dewalt or ryobi quick change countersink drill bit/screwdriver is a nice luxury also when you do large boxes.

I didn't see any caulk listed? Is it really air tight?

BTW, I would use carpet instead of spray paint. Looks JDM cleaner!

I just used wood glue on every edge. Seemed like it sealed ok for now. I'm gonna carpet that box sometime later.

lucky you. I forgot to bring a jigsaw to build that box, so we had to use a dremel. ahaha.

we used wood glue. with the dremel, it wasn't a perfect circle so where u mount the sub in, there were uneven angles. 2 of the 8 screws just dropped right in. lol. there is a leak. lol. nothing major though.

We went skimpy on the cosmetics, obviously

carpet cost too much for now. I think all we wanted to see was what this thing can do, and its not even in a ported box yet.

There wasn't much research necessary. It could be a good thing if it's ugly. Who knows. Someone might be laughing at it saying it's small and ugly and its cheap (because RE is not mainstream), but once cranked, hopefully it'll change their mind

I think you need to carpet that..... haha.

That is my box that I made, first try. It looks purple in the sun but it is actually black crushed velvet (I think that's what it's called)

I am actually having a problem with my setup if you want to try and help

I'll carpet that biznatch sometime. Might even turn it into a ported box somehow. Just throw me some MDF and a damn saw. No need for rulers either

good job dude, my first box build came out serious...I had it ported with aeroPort or something like that...Suggestion--Black spray paint = bad idea...Your box is going to slide all over the place and if its not wood spray paint, it will rub off all over the interior...Happened to me...it was NUTS... I would just get a piece of carpet and glue it to the bottom of the box so it doesnt slide in your trunk...besides that, good frikin job...

BTW!!! Take the sub out and put some caulking on the interior, you can use your finger...get white or clear, any kind is good as long as its wood caulk...It will help considerably... if not you will have air sneaking out all over the place, sooner or later your box will fall apart...
