squealing sound...maybe a brake issue???
ok. i've noticed that my crx is squealing. not a cute lil' piggy squeal...but an annoying ear piercing squeal...lovely.
ok, maybe not "ear piercing"...but to me it's unbearable and embarassing at the same time to be driving around with this noise.
i haven't had time to put the car up and look around yet. i'm not to familiar with brakes and suspension and the like either i might add. so...like usual, i come to my friendly neighborhood htech buddies to tell me what the F is going on with my car.
the first thing i've noticed only happens sometimes throughout the day...but it IS a daily issue. it sounds like a squealing while the vehicle is in motion. with the driver window down, it sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side wheel area. this noise only happens with the vehicle is in motion, so it's obviously not a motor issue. i can hear the noise even at freeway speeds as well. the noise is not constant however though.
the second thing i've noticed is when i drive in reverse. driving in reverse lets off another type of noise. this has only happened about 5 times now, but i want to take care of the issue before anything else develops from it. braking in reverse also weilds this noise occasionally. the noise sounds weird...the best way to describe it would to say it sounds like a party horn like kids blow at a b-day party.
any ideas guys? i would assume that the squealing may be due to a rotor? could it be something else? i have no idea what the sound in reverse gear is though.
PS- the squealing sound doesn't neccesarilly happen when the brakes are applied.

the squealing sounds like a belt slipping especially coming from the front drivers side. as for the reverse noise, is it only when braking in reverse?
the squealing sound doesn't sound like the typical belt squeal. it sounds like a metal on metal friction type squeal...make any sense of that?
as for the birthday party horn sound in reverse, it only happens while going slow and then the sound comes on when the brakes are applied. this sound doesn't come around much though, and it usually does when i'm on an incline.
any help guys?

Its most likely your brake pad wear indicators, they are supposed to squel when your pads get low, take your wheels off and do a full brake inspection im sure youll find the pads to be pretty worn down.

Yup, check your brake pads and exchange them. Be sure to check your discs too, to see if they have any scratches or damage.
I was experiencing a very similar sound to the one you described, then I checked and it was the brake pads. Going to change them tomorrow
