always wanted to start autoxing but too intimidated
ive been driving for 7 years now and have always wondered about autox. dont get me wrong i love drag and all but when i drive on the streets, its more like a course to me. anyway do all you autox-ers have powersteering? i always wondered about that because my HB doesnt have it. what is that site for that autox in camden? info is greatly appreciated.
i dont use p/s in my hatch and also, i run a 300mm steering wheel. ive never had a problem. just go and give it a chance. youll either hate autox or you will be hit with the racing crack pipe.
Autocross is nothing to be intimidated by. Most people aren't even out there for the competition aspect, they're just out there to have fun.
Autocrossing is not a natural skill, so don't sweat it if you don't do well your first time out. You have to attend many events to acquire the skills you need to be a front-runner. The most important thing is to have fun out there, and get as much seat time as you can to build your skills. Mods are not what make a car fast, the driver is.

I prefer no power steering; without it I have a better feel of the course surface and what the front tires are doing. A manual steering rack is no more difficult to turn than a power rack as long as you're going more than 5mph or so . . . even with a 350mm steering wheel and 235/45-13 tires.

I would opt for no powersteering to, but there is a guy around here that runs a pretty hardcore race prepped miata(not spec miata). Who this season put on powersteering. Granted he is 1 centimeter from the ground and is on hoosiers, so I assumed there had to be something about powersteering that would make him add 30-50 lbs to his car.

Could be that he swapped on a power rack with a quicker steering ratio. I don't know too much about Miata steering racks.
Why not ask him?

http://www.autox4u.com/schedule.htm All the Philly SCCA events are listed there, assuming we're talking about the same Camden. Have fun.

I was intimidated by autocross for years until I tried it, you look at the first run and all the anxiety goes away. Of course if theres a year gap between your first and your second autocross it comes back, but being slow at first is nothing to be afraid of.

Yeah, its always cool when you can teach a novice in your own car and get him to be fast (but not faster than you of course). I had a friend who never even drove stick until the Thursday before the event run my MR2 with me that Sunday and he was less than a second off my time that day. I was 7th in PAX and he was 19th, out of 90 or so. Very cool, made me look like the master teacher

the power steering rack is quicker than the manual. hence why people just remove the lines, pump, and brackets on their cars instead of swapping entire racks.
i took my power steering off, i have a 290mm wheel, with R compounds, and have no problems turning the wheel. of course i'm a larger gentleman who road races, not auto-x.

Just goes to show that some of the quickest lines are best taken slower. Most novices make up time in the slow sections and lose time in the fast sections.
Slower is faster.
