Default timing belt area howling sound?!?!

anyone ever heard of a howling sound coming from the timing belt area? its loud enough to here from inside the car while driving. its a 1.5 1989 dx stock with a NOx problem. its not a belt slipping sound. it sounds like wind blowing when the window is barley cracked open... if you know what i mean. it doesnt really do it at idle but anything just passed it does. and it does it almost all the time.i just bought the car and trying to get smogged so i could put my other motor in but this **** is really buggin me and im not sure if its the water pump. any suggestions would be great thanx.

I'd guess the bearing on the timing belt tensioner. If the belt is not old, you could change the tensioner without taking the belt off. If you take it off and it spins freely, then I would look at the water pump.

I agree but I would check the tension first...the timing belt may just be too tight, and that will cause a whining sound.

the timing belt is old...like i said i just bought the car and it just needs to pass smog then the motors outta there. im just afraid of it breaking before it acually gets to the smog shop. when i got it the timing belt was hella loose it made a kinds of noise..it was hitting the covers and flapping around so i adjusted it per spec then out of nowhere a few days later the sound started.

alright so now ive loosend the belt(a fair amount) and tightened to specs and just past that and the sound is the same no matter what the sound stays pretty damn loud.

I'll have to side with Mohudsolo and say that either the tensioner is going bad, or the water pump is about to take a **** on you.

water pomp makes more of a high pitched noise, the sound you describe seems to be the timing belt being too tight

edit:nevermind
