Default Is 89 Octane (mig-grade) ok for a gsr?

I am finally beginning to feel the pinch in my wallet $$$$$ when feeling up on gas, since I have 2 cars which require premium. Premium unlead here is $2.41 !!! I also happen to drive a lot, which is also a . I was thinking about going down to 89 Octane (mid-grade) but only from name brand gas like Chevron or Shell. Anyone done this???? Any effects on the motor?? *Yeah, I know the gsr requires pemium gas*

The problem you run into is: The stock GSR is tuned with a slightly more agressive ignition and fuel curve than most commuter engines. By doing so, the engine runs a bit leaner than any particular other 1.8 made by another company to run regular gas and depends upon a certain level of combustion effeciency in order to see that all of the gas is burnt during combustion. The higher octane gas will burn with higher effeciency than the lower octane gas, therefore reducing the likelyhood of combustion associated problems like detonation. Yes your car will run with 89 octane, but remember that it was tuned for 91 and that you run the risk of pinging/detonation if you don't run at least 91.

I wouldn't do it. I say this after driving a stock GSR that had 89 octane in it and motor sounded like total crap

nicely put Kendall...i agree, do not do it...if u think u feel the pinch now in the financial department, how do u think it will feel when u feel the pinch of detonation...let me tell u from experience with detonation, it pinches a whole lot of money away from you...when it could have been avoided...

Running 89 instead of 91 is fine. Hell you can even run 87 if you want. Honda compensates for various differences between cars, weather, gas etc., so if you run 89 on accident your engine wont detonate.

A GSR should be run on 91 octane or higher. At least that's what it states in the owner's manual and I'd listen to that since it does come straight from the manufacturer.

Maybe one day someone will get wise and start making "economy" chips we can swap in the ECU for when gas reach Euro prices.

Stick with 91, but if a tank of 89 (maybe even 87) and a bottle octane booster is cheaper, that could also work. If you use 89 straight, keep you foot out of it.

my g1 says run premium only. ive used 87 since the day ive owned it. and filled up on 91, maybe once your twice. no noticable difference at all. if you dont detonate, or ping using 87 (which you shouldnt), buying 91 over 87, is just wasting your $. ask ANY professional race car driver. theyll tell you the same. you should always run the lowest octane your motor will allow you to. if you run any higher, your 1) wasting money 2) un necessarily polluting the environment. i dont know where people get the idea that higher octane is better from.

I have 2 cars and drive 30000 miles a year. I don't see you driving 30k miles a year.

do whatever you want buddy, i'm only putting in premium in my sweet GSR. I'm not going to jeopardize the life of my expensive motor trying to save 1 dollar. You can just save the dollar off putting off that soda at mickie D's by replacing it with water. =P

No difference probably because you've never felt it with the right octane and by now too late.

"and filled up on 91, maybe once your twice"

i basically filled up just to see the difference (which there was none)

my car may be old, but my compression is near perfect, the whole top end is new, and the car is 100% tuned up.

I ran mine on 89 for 100k miles because I was short on cash and drive 25k miles a year. I recently switched to 91, and there is absolutely no difference performance wise.

As for the health of the engine, I haven't seen the inside of mine except through the spark plugs holes and when I did a valve adjustment and everything I could see looked fine. I still get the exact same gas mileage I got since I owned the car.

Never use anything less then 91 Octane... you're going to have to deal with it.

Personally.. I try and put 94 in mine

Stupid gas prices I'd get the mid-grade, not the lowest. Hopefully the prices will go down soon...then jump right back to the highest, I put 93 in my LS.

The price increase for premium is not alot, maybe 10Cents more/gal. So when you are low say you have 2-3 gallons left. you fill up 10 gal. Thats only an extra dollar to your bill. Dont buy chips at lunch anymore and you will be fine. To all those that say there is no diff. Pull off your head and look at the pistons. I bet there is little tiny abrasions and chips in the tops. Thats not good. it wont blow up but its still not good. Dont risk your motor for the savings of 1$ a tank.
