synthedic oil question
Hi i have a 98 integra gsr. It has 35000km on it. Today i'm gonna change the oil and i was thinking of doing synthedic (i use regular oil now). I was wondering if there is any drawbacks to using it? i hear it makes your engine last longer and it may improve gas milage and maybe power. Also can i just a regular honda oil filter?
synthetic may cause leaks to appear, since its diffrent down to the molecular level it has a tendancy to "find" leaks because it can seep into crevices that normal oil cant.
using synthetic really depends on the mileage and condition of engine.
if the manual says to use a regular 10-30w, using synthetic wont help you by any noticable means. to put it bluntly, use whatever the owners manual reccomends.
if you do decide to run synthetic, use Mobil 1 oil and filter. mobil makes the best of both and its been proven many times.

synthetic oil tends to burn quicker because it's a lot thinner than standard oil, but the free flowing nature of it allows it to get into many crevices of your engine's rotating assembly which is good.
actually synthetic doesn't burn as easy as reg oil since it handles higher temps
-Provides excellent engine cleanliness through superior sludge and varnish protection
-Helps reduce engine wear at high temperatures with improved viscosity stability
-Provides outstanding high-temperature protection under severe driving conditions
-Provides superior cold-temperature protection through faster oil flow at start-up
-Helps improve and maintain fuel efficiency for the life of the oil (applies to 5W30
and 10W30 grades

syn. oil get bad a bad name.
they don't cause leaks, but they penetrate deeper into metal, gasket.
they don't burn, the assumed missing oil is up in the ohc, syn oil love to stick to metal, which is very very good for cool start
they have a very wide temperature range.
good info guy.
do you really need it? not likely but it's a good option.
make sure you change it every 3k with a new filter.
try valvoline syn. blend if you on budget, they are good stuff.
recommend and used by my professor in college.
anyway, i recently received a secret receipt for ghetto/garage blend.
should i reveal the formula?

It's actually because it doesn't have the swelling agents that dino-oils use.

Like before 1978 or so...
Not that I'm the exhaustive tome for oil knowlegde, however I've yet to meet, see, or here of anyone that has made more power or measureable fuel economy from using synthetic. Furthermore, from personal experience and looking at other's teardowns, I have yet to see adverse bearing were from using conventional oil.

ALOT of people do that but dont forget the number one reason you need a oil change.
NO it's not because it's dirty, you need it because the ph level change.
stick with 3000miles and you should have a healthy running motor
