What do you guys use to take off Axle Nuts?
spent like maybe an hr and a half and broke 3 ratchets using a 36mm socket and (3) 1/2'' ratchets and breaker bar before my friend and i gave up. any way to get that sucker out w/o impact gun? ive read they are torqued to 180lbs.
1/2" breaker bar usually does the job. But try spraying some PB Lube, and have at it with the breaker bar, and get 1 or 2 foot metal pipe for extra leverage (stick breaker bar half way into the pipe). You might need 2 people...
mah teef
seriously just get a breaker bar, and either have someone hold it in place for you or try to use ur left to hold it striaght on the nut ( so it dont slip off and strip the nut ) then just slowly start putting ur weight on it.. You might have to jump on it a few times but it will turn..
PB BLASTER is the ****, i would recommend that to anyone that is trying to get ANY BOLT/NUT off!!
Spary that on, wait 2 min's then try it !!
Remember "righty, tighty" ... "Lefty, Loosey"
SOundS gh3y as **** but that's how i remember which way to turn to either loosen the ****, or tighten ****!! .. **** !!

also have someone press the brake pedal as you try and loosen it. I have used the PB blaster method, heat it up with a torch, breaker bar, and a combination of the 3. One time I had to give up and drive to a shop, have them loosen it with an air gun, tighten it back up with a rachet (hand tight), and drive home carefully. Fortunately, the shop was at the entrance to my neighborhood.
Use this

Make sure to unstake the nut first, spray PB Blaster liberally, and have at it.
I'd recommend a Craftsman 1/2" breaker bar, as you can probably get it replaced when it breaks

wow but in all honesty is not that serious.. just get a 1/2 socket w/ wrench... and a foot long breaker bar.. i loosen the nut while the car is on the ground.. then after it's loose i jack it up
I just took mine off this weekend because i am redoing the whole front end of my accord. Because those nuts have been on there a while, one will most likely break about 2-3 of the 1/2" breaker bars with the 4 foot pipe. If you want to do it right, use a 3/4" breaker bar or an air gun. By the time you break 2 or 3 of those 1/2" breaker bars you would have paid for the socket and 3/4" breaker bar so do yourselves a favor in the future.
And the torque specs are i believe 140 ftlbs if i recall. don't quote me because that is just a guesstimate off the top of my head.

I use a 3 foot metal pipe wrapped around my 1/2 inch socket wrench handle and I just jack up the edge of the metal pipe with a hydro jack and it breaks the axle nuts loose.
i wouldnt use any socket wrench, unless you want a broken one. just get at least a 1/2" breaker bar. GET CRAFTSMAN. all the hand tools are lifetime warranty. goto a discount tire co. bring the 1/2" drive 36mm socket, ask to use one of their air guns, they will let you. i work there and we do the craziest things for some whacky customers.
i used a 1/2'' breaker bar with the 36mm socket and a big fat *** 6ft bed post pipe. got one side off and the other side the breaker bar broke again. gotta go to harbor freight tools and get another one as its has a "lifetime warranty" like the other 3 ratchets i broke and maybe pick up some pb blaster since wd-40 isnt working very well.
I broke 3 of the autozone breaker bars in a row. When I went to return the third one, the guy behind the counter was PISSED. He couldn't do anything but let me get a new one because they have a warranty also
I still have the fourth one!
Yeah, PB Blaster is the McShizzle with cheese. Liquid Wrench is pretty good stuff too.

Yeah, there's an indent in the axle, and the axle nut is usually bent inwards into the indent, that's staking.
I used a flathead screwdriver, and gently tapped it with a hammer. Position the end of the flathead between the nut and the axle, and just bend it back out.

if you do go with the 3/4" drive, finding a 3/4" drive 36mm axle socket is kind of hard. If you are gonna try w/ the 1/2" drive socket and use an adapter, try to find an adapter that is very strong (maybe impact ones?). The weak link will probably be the 1/2" drive portion of the adapter.
