What are the symptoms of a failing slushbox?
Here are my symptoms:
1. When shifting from P to N, D4 or D3, car surges.
2. When shifting from D4, D3 or N to P, car surges.
3. When driving in D4, shifting is a little strained (delayed?) especially from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.
4. Similar delay is noticed during downshifts.
Will this be caused by too much oil in tranny? If draining and re-filling does not resolve problem, how much should I budget to swap in a used slushbox? How reliable are these slushboxes anyway?
Car is a 91 Accord EX-R.
Thanks.

I cannot tell if the right fluid is in there but I am scared to the ***** to flush the slushbox.
I flushed the slushbox in a good working BMW transmission and it headed south.

just change the fluid. drain and fill...2.5 qts of honda atf-z1...the car does not have an internal filter... if you use trans fluid other than hondas you possibly may not correct the problem.
I have 260K miles on an AT. Key is flush every 20-30K miles. If the fluid is fresh and you still have problems, then take it to someone you trust (get references).
the thing is that everytime you flush your tranny, you only getting 3/4(sometime less or more) atf out, a bunch of old oil is still in the torque converter.
10-20k for a flush and refill with honda oem stuff might just can save you a transaxle
another thing to look for went buying an automatic equipped car is by looking at the dipstick, if there's little black, tar like particle on top of the dipstick, the chances are, the tranny is loosing the clutchpack.
if it would shift now, sell it. Because it wouldn't shift much longer
