My timing looks perfect. Why do I need a cam gear on a mini-me?
I have a d15b2/d16y7 mini-me. When I use my timing gun, I can see that the pointer is right on the middle red mark on the crankshaft pulley. When I put the crankshaft timing gear back on there was a notch that i lined up with the arrow that was on the block. So I know my timings right on the money. So why do I see so many post saying that you need the cam gear to get the timing right? TIA.

technically thats not a mini-me.
also ignition timing is not cam timing...
as for cam timing:
the d15b2 head is the same as the d16a6 and d15b7...just the cam and valvetrain differ. (i believe the camgear is the same)
im not sure if cam timing would be affected if you put a d16y7 head on a 88-95 d16 block...someone whos done this can answer that.
the d15 has a different deck height than the d16...therefore when the bottom end is at TDC the respective cam will have to be in a different position to be at TDC.
88-95 use the same aftermarket cam gear, 96-00 is different. im not sure of the differences between 88-95 and 96-00 is but it will most likely screw your cam timing up, which you wont notice when you adjust your distributor to correct the ignition timing.
im sorry this doesnt make much sense...
think of when you put a d16a6 cam in a d15b2...the cam timing is different between the two cams because of the difference in length between the cam and crank.

the head deck height on vtec heads and non vtec ones are different
when u have a vtec head on a non vtec block, timing is trown off 1/2 tooth...
wich u can compensate with a cam gear setup @ 4.75 cam degrees, wich is about 9.5 crank degrees (a lot)

This is confusing. I thought the d16y7 head casting was the same as a d16z6. So should my cam timing be off? So then my ignition timing has nothing to do with the cam? Can someone elaborate further?
