Default How do I get rid of tree sap?

I'v tried all the stuff you can buy at your local car parts store and the stuff still wont come off. Anybody know if car detail shops have special compounds or has anybody used stuff that actually works? Thanks.

Boiling hot water and a Q-TIP works well too. Clay bars are a lot of work IMO.

I didn't know about the Q-Tip and Hot water.

Ditto on clay. It's ok if you will be doing the whole car. If it's just a spot, it's not worth spending $20 on it.

Not to sound ignorant but what exactly is clay bar and where would I purchase it? Also could you describe the removal process. The tree sap is hardened. Thanks.

Exactly as you imagine it. Like the stuff you play with in art class. You spray some lube, rub the clay on the paint surface. And the clay picks up crap that is stuck in the paint. Note: It does not make your car shine. It just pick up crap.

You can order it (such as Zaino) or you can buy it at the store like Pep Boys. Mother's brand seem to be popular, but the lube they give you suck big time. I would make your own from car soap & water. Cost about $20.00.

Claybar works, I tried everything (steel wool, bug and tar remover, gasoline) but never got it off the windows. Bought Meguliar's clay bar for $20 and worked like a charm. DEFINATELY worth it, this crap was all over my windows.

A few more points.

1. Don't drop it. It will pick up dirt from the ground. You wouldn't want to rub that back into the paint. Hang on tight.

2. Use lots of lube, to avoid scratching. That's why I make my own.

3. Clay is expensive. You may want to cut it into pieces. One bar is good enough for 3 Honda size cars. Store the rest with a clear wrap is it will be air tight.

4. Do the top surfaces first with the freshest clay. Where the sun doesn't shine really don't matter. If you never used it before, test in out on a surface until you are comfortable with it.

5. Don't rub hard. It's not an eraser. Like wax, several times is always better than one hard effort. It may scratch.

6. Keep in mind clay doesn't make your car shine. You may need a polish or cleaner afterwards, depending on your surface. It just removes the contamiations, so the surface is smooth like silk.

Good luck.
