That's the only way to do it. You have to machine down the D2S bulbs in order to fit the mounting ring from a 9006 on there. I had D2S bulbs w/ glued 9006 rings for almost 2 years and they were just fine. The good thing about doing it that way is that you can use OEM ballasts w/ the original D2 connector on there. I'm glad my old setup was like this because when I switched to OEM bi-xenon projectors, I just had to get new unmodified D2S bulbs and I was able to retain the ballasts I was using before.
do you have pics of the mounting ring from a 9006 that i need? Do you mean to cut off the mouting thing from a non HID bulb and glue it to the d2s bulb?

oh yikes that would be REALLY ghetto. I doubt you would get proper bulb placement if you did it that way. In fact I know you wouldn't.
Here's the bulbs I used to use in my stock projectors. I would sell them to you but I promised them to a friend who is putting Denali projector headlights on his 2000 Chevy pickup. You can see how the D2S base was machined down right below the bulb itself, and the 9006 ring was attached.
