get there early
walk the course as much as you can
bring water, food, sunblock, a hat, sunglasses
check tire pressure, etc
watch others tackle the track
ride with veterans if possible
have someone with exp ride with you, just to make sure you arent doing anything extraordinarily wrong.
drive conservatively your first run then get more aggressive with each run
keep both hands on the wheel when not shifting
have fun!

Get lots of seat time. It's more fun than spending tons of money on bling parts, and you'll see tons of improvement.

Enjoy!

Look ahead,... no further ahead.

Ride with instructors!

Read as much as you can about the event, about autocrossing in general and about vehicle dynamics.

As Bruce Lee said, "... be like water"
As I say, "... be like sponge"

Drive your car before you start worrying about setups..

You don't want to buy things you don't need.

sometimes you can double your runs by going non-competition, it costs double you're technically not scoring against anyone but you get double the seat time, look ahead don't look at the turn you're in, but the next one, walk the course a bunch of times before the event, talk to more experienced drivers, and if they have a novice walkthrough, pay attention, also see if someone will give you a ride in their car
