Exactly how bad do test pipes smell?
is it similar to the smell i get when i push the car hard for a few minutes or so?
BTW, i'm trying to decide if i should get a high-flow cat with my upcoming JDM 4-1 or just get a test pipe. my stock cat was replaced twice under warranty, and with the word of so many carsound cats failing i feel like i should just bypass that whole "possible" headache.

Test pipes don't smell bad at all, it's what comes out of them that stinks
It's not too bad without a CAT, it's the person behind you that gets all the stink.
But come on, think of the children!

the two previous stock cats got clogged up for whatever reason. never figured it out. but my gas mileage improved big time each time they were replaced.
i can't use the stock cat b/c the i'll be installing a JDM 4-1 which will require a shorter cat.

i had the air-fuel ratio checked a while back while on the dyno and it was fine. plus, the aftermarket fuel pressure gauge i have reads 45 psi or so with revving the throttle cable, which is normal according to my tech.
besides, how can i tune a stock ECU?

You will smell it at idle with your windows down... but it's when you're driving behind that it really hits you. It's like the smell of unburn fuel and I surprised that cops didn't pick up on it and call out the sniffer truck...
As for liking that smell... to each his own I suppose...

Noxious and foul.
Get a high-flow cat - it's a worth investment.

Think that's a little extreme there? I run 3'' straight pipe on my notorious environmentally killing rotary, and unless you stand directly behind a running car it's fine.

My R with a pipe stinks. Windows down when warm out and it is deff noticable. I have been told it is very noticabl when driving behind.
For some reason Mark, your car smells nowhere as bad as mine.

2 things contribute to this, methinks.. I have the USDM ECU and you have the JDM.. and I have very few miles on my motor compared to yours.. otherwise, we pretty much have similar stuff.. same exhaust, testpipe, similar header..
