car is burning gas
I am getting 12 mpg, I changed out my fuel filter and I'm not throwing any codes... occasionally there is a gas smell, fuel pump clicks on fine. Any ideas of what could be causing it? The car is a 94 Nissan Sentra, it should be getting 30-38 mpg

Check for any punctures in your tank, fill it up, turn the ignition on and off a couple times, then get under there and look around. Start at the tank and follow the line as best you can. There has to be a leak somewhere. If the car was running rich enough to burn that much fuel your car would bog like nobodys business and be smoking all day.
Edit : I see your in the 904, where you at? If you need I can take a look at it for you sometime on the weekend.

was there anything visibly wrong with the gas cap? That sounds weird that a gas cap could leak out a couple gallons of gas

I checked aruond the fuel tank and lines there are no visible leaks/dripping anywhere... but this wasn't done on a full tank because I can't afford a full tank right now

it could be pretty much anywhere something connects in you feul system. check the drain plug, hardlines, return line, etc.
also check the injector gromets, i've had those go bad. turn the key on till the pump primes then push on the injector clips and wiggle the injector, if its bad you have anywhere from a faint smell of gas to a two foot streem spray up form the feul rail.
good luck

ok here's the deal, I just got back from driving around a little bit... started to smell a strong gas smell, checked around the tank and saw a pretty good sized wet spot.. It was definately gas and it was a pretty good amount of it

There is a right way, and a wrong way to do this. the wrong way would be to not take out your gas tank, the right way would be to remove it, and have it professionally sealed back up!
