Tensioner bolt is stripped!!!
I was working on my b18c5 powered hatch this weekend, and swapping cams on it. Well since I had the timing belt so tight the first time, it wouldn't simply just slip on nice and neat..... so instead I have to loosen the tensioner bolt.
Well clearance is tight with the motor in an EF, so I have to go to lowe's to get a shorter 14mm socket. Great, they only have a 12pt one... so I say **** it, it's only like 40 ft-lb, right? Well, it promptly strips the head of the bolt when I'm trying to loosen it...
****! Now I can't even get the timing belt on, nor the car running at this point. Basically, now I've removed the driver's side motor mount and will probably remove the crank pulley and everything in the way of me removing the tensioner bolt...
Unless someone else has a better idea. Space is tight. Is there some kind of tool that will help me remove a bolt that is semi-stripped at the head?
Tomorrow I'm going to buy a 6pt 14mm socket like I should've in the first place!

If you have a decent set of vise clamps, you can probably get a pretty good hold on the bold assuming you can wedge it in the space. If you can, then get a breaker bar of some sort (I just use 1/2 of the handle from my aluminum jack) and really get some torque to get it loose.

Why not use a normal box wrench on it? That's what I did when I changed my timing belt but you're gonna have a hard time finding a 6 point box wrench. Buy yourself one of those nifty gear wrenches, those are normally 6 point.

1/2" drive won't fit in that tight space... 3/8" drive it is.....
I will continue to dick with this POS tomorrow. I have a 14mm 6pt 3/8" drive socket, AND a bolt out kit similar to that craftsman one... it was $25 though!
Round two tomorrow!!!

.....wtf is that?
.....wtf is that?
well, turbo socket is just a "generic" name for them. at work tomorrow, ill check
for the name of ours. i think they are made by a company called hanson.
EDIT, i found them at amazon.
he is the link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi...78265
when you look at the bottom of these, they have a "twist" look. these work very well and have helped me out greatly. the set the we have at the shop has more sockets then the one in the link, but the one shown is just more popular sizes.

This is a little off the stripped tensioner topic but related anyway .. Do you guys use "replacement" (non-Honda OEM) tensioners on your cars ?? I found that the difference in cost between the oem part and the replacement part is significant .. is it the same thing or what ??
I have no idea...
But I prefer the oem part for peace of mind. With the hookup from LEN, the cost difference is insignificant.
As a matter of fact, he's hooking me up with a new tensioner bolt.
Is there a washer in that assembly too? I don't want to replace the bolt if the washer is inside the plastic timing belt lower cover and will fall when I go to remove the tensioner bolt.....
I got the tensioner bolt loose, btw.
I just used a 6pt 14mm 3/8" drive like I should've in the first place.
