LSD...Clutch or gear type??
I post this on competition but didnt really get too many replies...Anyone here use a clutch type LSD like KAZZ, ATS or Cusco.....I know they need more maintenance etc., but performance wise how do they compare to a gear type LSD like Quaife? I was reading the Rev civic magazine and I noticed that all the tunners cars like spoon, topfuel, jun....ALL use the clutch type! Any thoughts??
There are advantages to both. I like the clutch type for a variety of reasons. work in drag race situations, not just road race/autocross. They are more aggressive. Work in snow/rain/foul weather. Tunable. You can select 1, 1.5 or 2 way as well as lock up percentage depending on your needs. Advantage of the Quaife is it's quietness and lifetime warranty.
Me and Dan have disagreed on many things but we will always see eye to eye when it comes to the clutch vs. gear LSD debate. The Clutch LSD's give more control and feedback!
ummm... any diff will break when used in the wrong environment! Most of the Gymkhana cars use KAAZ or ATS diffs because of their quick locking action. And I am talking about 200~240whp cars on courses with extremely tight 180 and 360 degree turns. KAAZ sells more than one type of LSD. KAAZ also isn't the only clutch LSD on the market. Mugen, Spoon, ATS, Cusco, OS Giken and a couple more are available for Hunda's..
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but have you ever noticed how Kaaz and ATS LSDs look really really similiar? What kinda made me upset was that I actually broke the Kaaz on street tires. Some people say that this is due to wheel hop, but I have poly engine mounts and the car stays rock solid even with slicks. I broke two of the planetary gears that ride on the cross shaft and the way they broke it looks like those gears are made out of some kinda cheap cast metal. I usually don't like to rag on a product, and I hoped that this was some kind of freak occurance, but I had someone recently tell me the same thing happened to them. Needless to say I no longer own a KAAZ lsd.

Actually I'm looking into the ATS 1.5 way since 9 out of 10 tuners use it in their Hondas. I have a stock type r lsd now, should I expect a major improvement? Also beside changing lsd oil regularly....what other maintenance should I aware of?
When you say lock up percentage, like 30 60...100% etc, what do that reffer to? How long (distance) they lock up? or the strength they lock up?
Its kinda hard to find ATS in the state...only one shop that I know in NJ that carries them (pricey!!). Anyone know who else sells ATS product with a reasonable price?

when I say lockup I am talking about the cam that controls how soon and hard the clutch pack engages. As the angle of the cam plate gets steeper the lockup action gets slower/weaker. The clutch packs only engage when you are accelerating or decelerating(1.5 way and 2 way diff only). Under normal driving or cruising conditions the packs are not engaged but once you romp the pedal the clutches do their job. I'll try to dig up one of the old LSD debates for ya...
I forgot more about hondas then you will ever know....
