Tokico Illumina Coilovers BROKEN POPPED THROUGH HELP!
I was heading up to englishtown this morning and i hit a sewar grate. After that it felt like my shocks were blown. So i checked under the hood and the top part of the shock, where the adjustable dampening screw is, is popped through and sticking up. I head back home and the same thing happend to the other side. WTF happened. does anyone know what happened and how i should fix it... i cant even drive my car like this.... what do i do?

i did that to my car by accident once also. Did you just install them and drive on them cuz i forgot to put the one piece on the bottom. Its a round piece that fits on the shock from ur stock shock and it keeps the shock from going all the way through and popping out. You must of forgot to put that on there.
Isn't that washer supposed to be installed on top of the shock, then the black sleeve slid over, and finally inserted into the car from below? Just curious, because there is no way that washer went through that hole still looking new.
my first experience lowering a car, this happened. you forgot to put that piece (metal washer), that prevents the shock towers from doing that.
luckly the hood on the car was off when this happened to my friend
goodluck

I had a shop installl them for me.... they have been on my car for a few weeks now. Imean i only drive my car like once a week but i guess from hitting that sewar at like 80mph it must have done something. HOW DO I FIX THIS??

Correct, but most likely his shocks are going to be damaged now.
I would make them replace the shocks

I doubt the shocks are damaged. They're just not doing anything right now (damping the springs motion) because they are just fully extended and sitting there. Stock shocks as well as Tokicos and KYB's have a tapered area on the shock piston, and a special washer sits on it, right above the bumpstop. Without the washer the piston can poke up through there like that. You just need to remove the shocks, take them apart, and install the washers.
And this is why I don't let shop grease monkeys touch my car.

Yup, everyone here got it.
It's that washer that slides on UNDER the assembly. It prevents the shock from doing what it did. How did it not damage your hood?
Definitely go back and complain and make them install it right.

this just happened to me like 5 mins ago, i hit a huge *** ditch and i didn't even see it!! i was soo pissed off, does anyone know if it is ok to drive on for about 20 miles, cause i gotta go to work first thing in the morning, and then ill go to my buddy's and fix it!! thanks!
how can anyone call themself a mechanic if they dont even know to put the stock washer/cap back in. That was very dangerous. i dont even know how u can even put it back together without the washer/cap in place.
well my friend was the one that did it b/c i was too busy drilling the bolts out of my lca's cause they snapped, does anyone have a pic of the washer that i need to throw on there or instructions that show the washer or anything??!!!
thanks
thanks

I don't have a picture to show you unfortunately, but let me try to explain.
The shaft of the shock/strut is slightly tapered at the top, right? Now think logically, if you slide a large thick washer onto it until it slides all the way down (where the tapered part gets thick again), it will prevent the entire assembly from shooting upward, right?
It's a very easy concept, but very hard to explain with words, maybe someone can find a picture.
Anyway, think about it like this. You have a hole about the size of your finger. Right now, you can easily slide your finger in. (Your finger is the shaft of the shock/strut). Now put on a ring. It'll probably slide on to about your 2nd knuckle because that's where your finger gets thicker, right? Now try to slide it into the hole. Won't go in, right? Same principle.

The washer is special only to these shocks, the inside diameter of the washer is tapered to match the taper on the shock, and it's also thicker in the middle than on the outside edges. The outside diameter of the washer also matches the indent in the top of the bumpstop.
