How can you tell YS1 trannies apart?
I've asked this numerous times before (elsewhere). Seems like there's no external difference between a VTEC and a non-VTEC YS1 cable transmission. Taking it apart is the only answer I ever got. No one has yet to figure out if the serial number means anything.
If you find a answer.
If you find a answer.
call me crazy, but doesnt the trans have the code in the serial number on it? for instance i just bought a j1, and it starts the serial with that. and a ys1 that i looked at in person had the beginning starting with ys100000000etc. i could be wrong. good luck and post up if the answer is found for every ones info. peace
Dennis, if you need one checked out may be able to get my good friend to do it cheap for you. Unless you know how to open one. Count the teeth on the large gear (ring gear) and there should be 66 teeth. At least all the USDM GS-Rs i have seen had that amount.
OPEN IT?
IF you want to know what the gear ratios are..... what if you..... turned the input shaft and counted how many turns till you get the axle shafts to turn once? After all that what the ratios are doing.
1st gear should be a hair past 14 and a half turns for a GSR (14.55:1) or almost 14 of 13.93:1 for an LS.
EASY.

Ok, well you already know the transmissions are both YS1 because of the stickers.
A search on here revealed a link to a site that has the gear ratios listed.
GSR YS1________________________LS YS1
1st 3.307_________________________ 3.166
2nd 2.105_________________________1.857
3rd 1.458_________________________ 1.259
4th 1.107_________________________ 0.935
5th 0.880__________________________0.742
Axle 4.400__________________________4.400
3.307 x 4.400 = 14.55 1st gear
That means that the engine spins over 14.55 times for every one time the tires go around on a GSR in first.
Take a black felt tip, make a mark on the trans where the axles slide into the diff. Then make another mark on the gear inside the diff so that you can watch the mark travel around till it comes back to where it started. Then make a mark on the shaft that the clutch rides on. Heck if you have a clutch disc handy make the mark on the disc and the bell housing. Then turn the clutch disc (or shaft) counting how many turns it takes to make the axle go around once.
Granted this will only work if your trans off the engine and out of the car.
Also, the guy at my junkyard said he has a book he can look the serial number up in.
