Emissions??? B16a FAILED again
SO i have a 89 crx JDM b16a in illinois. 1st time around HC levels were 2.51 and Co levels were 52.4 they need to be under .80 and 15.0 in illinois. 2nd time around i ran HC 4.84 and CO 60.9 , after i changed my o2 sensors and cat back. I have a all 2.5 stainless catback w/stock exhaust mani.. I know I was running rich because of my bad o2 sensors the 1st time around but my stupid *** went and took the test anyway. SO i changed em. i also added that "All you need" **** in my gas tank and used it as i listed in instructions. WELL here is my question i probably sound like a stupid *** but I may have my o2 sensors switched which would explain my running rich still, Is the primary o2 the one closest to the Distributer? I had to cut solder and heatshrink with shielding because my orrigianl harness was missing female plugs for o2 sensor wires. I also am running a BOMZ high flow cat. Has anyone passed with a high flow? ANy suggestions???????????????????HELP
p.s. also pr3 computer
p.s. also pr3 computer
I would try and get a oem cat from a junkyard for 10 bucks and try and get one thats good and clean and soak it before you install it so break some of the **** stuck in the screens
I got my B16A1 to pass with a gutted cat, no charcoal canister (i installed it, but didn't hook it up). This is in Nevada, which has the same smog laws as Cali, except the visual and dyno
Also, i had used my fields controller to control the fuel maps
i suggest you do the same.

Thanks for the replys, i am going to weld some flanges on a stock cat so i can bolt it right on, and so i can slap the high flow back up once i pass. I might try bringing it to one of those emission diagnostic places to see if they can find something that I overlooked. A buddy of mine told me to put a bottle or two of stright alcohol into the gas, he said it would trick the computer and lower my hydrocarbons. Ever hear of this? Any thing i can add to insure that i will pass once the cat is on? True the BOMX is supposed to be a high flow cat , but is kinda like a resonator/ real small chamber no screens. This is deffinately why my car wont pass at least i think.

i think it's a federal law that junkyards can't sell exhaust equipment... or at least cats.
i could be wrong though

I just smogged the B16 in my 91 hb and I live in IL too. I failed the first time through but after doing the usual checks(o2,coolant temp sensor, and ignition components) I went back and still failed. I had a Catco cat on there which helped me pass 2 yrs ago but this time around it was junk. Bought a new cat and I passed easily. One thing I usually do is lean the fuel ever so slightly when I get it tested. Dont go too lean as this will cause high combustion chamber temps which can also make you fail. Good luck!!
I deffinately am still running rich, any suggestions to lean it out? I wired the o2 sensor closest to the distributer to the existing harness and to pinout c16, and i ran the second o2 sensor to pinout c8 dirrectly from the sensor to the computer on an idividual wire. Is this right, is the c16 the primary and c8 bthe secondary? this could be my whole problem, but if i did have em switched ,would my car be running relivantly smooth with no codes? To help out, i am running stock b16a pr3 ECU , stock injectors, MSD ignition, short ram intake. Timing 16. o yeh and 92 octane gas.
So i figured it out, turns out when i was soldering my new O2 sensors on i accidentally switched the wires. So the primary sensor was soldered to the wire where the secondary sensor would be. No wonder I failed so horribly! i am switching to a stock cat tomorrow and I am still going to bring it in the emissions diagnostic place to see if they can find any more problems just to make sure, after all I only have 3 trys, and two are alreay gone. So i have to get everything perfect.

believe me, it took me 3 hrs of fooling around with my fuel maps to get it to pass with a gutted cat...
but, least i can say i got a legal smog... even if i cheated.
