New To Imports
Hi all here in honda-tech. I am very new to the inport world. I have always driven a domestic car and know my performance only with domestic. Well I wanted to get in the import world but first wanted to learn more about it. So I decided to buy a car and work on it to become more familiar with Honda and how they run. The project car I got was a CRX 87 Gen 1 SI fuel injected. Car does not go past 30 mph oil is leaking through top valves and out the pan. Backfires like a mother..... fuel pressure only puts out about 15PSI. So basically what I wanted to do was of course a motor swap.
I am not to familiar with the honda motrs so if anyone could tell me what a motor to put in this car would be. Hopefully I can at least get 200 hp in this car. If i cant its just another junkyard scrap so please help.
Also for looks would like to do a body conversion. Nothing too fancy. Something that might bolt on like a gen 2 crx without using the nasty looking hood bumper.
Anyone who can recommend any bolt on conversions..
Well any help would be really great, and I really appreciate people taking time to read this
Thanks

Well, you realize that 200WHP in that car will be pretty much insane...you'll be running 13s easy. keep in mind is extremely light.
You didnt pick the best car for a swap tho :s honda only switch to the ever popular d series engine in 88 (engine dimentions basically unchanged untill 2001)
I've heard of swaps beeing done into 87s, its not impossible as the car is allready FI so its not the end of the world. Just sucks that you are trying to learn about honda with a tougher to swap into car.
As far as the power goals you want. Comming from a domestic, you might as well just turbo it right now. The torque output of any of honda's naturally aspirated engines is just embarassing. Not to say that it wont be quick tho.
The cheapest and most fun swap you can probably do is to replace that old engine with a d16a6, these are basically considerd junk....its a stock 88-91 crx/civic si engine. Puts out 106 hp and about the same in torque. I'm unsure how hard the swap is tho.
If you end up having to do an OBD conversion (no clue what OBD version that 87 is), might as well move up to OBD1, its still easy to tune, and allows you to pick a more modern engine. 92-95 (I think). If you can get your hands on a 92-95 si engine, its ~130 hp and something like 110 torque.
Then install a small turbo and enjoy. The number you have posted is easy to reach with a turbo, not so easy with a naturally aspirated engine.
Keep in mind that this car is light and its its plus point, dont go swapping an H22 (2.2 lt prelude VTEC engine) in there (no clue if it will even fit) as it is allot heavier and will screw uyp the cars handling.
If you're not too committed to your crx, try and find an 88-91 si instead. They are much easier to work with, as the engine dimentions are quite common and motor mounts for hybrids are easy to find.
Enjoy your honda. You'll find they are quite different then domestics. You'll either love it or hate it. They are much more fun at high rpms in curves etc than in a straight line. Kinda like a 4 wheel motorcycle.

Welcome to the "import world"
I used to be a domestic guy myself, until I realized how much potential Honda engines have.
I've got a built LSVTEC in my '91 Civic HB. Running about 12.4:1 compression and putting out a good amount of power, hoping for a 13.0 1/4mi run at the track. I drove my car from AZ to NC, 4300RPM @ 67 or so MPH getting 26MPG or so. I'm reliable and fast, the best of both worlds.
The most common engine swaps in an EF is most definatley a B series (DOHC VTEC). It is fairly simple to do, not much modification is required. What engine you build all depends on how much money you have to work with. If you don't have that much to work with, a B16 would be the cheapest. Then you have several different types of B18s.
As for a front end, you can go with a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) front end, and all the JDM exterior accessories. Try using the search feature for engine swaps, and JDM accessories, I'm sure you'll find a lot of useful information. Never buy rice accessories, stay JDM
Here is a picture of my engine... My engine bay is practically the same as yours.

Thanks that was helpfull but I remember the only thing I do know about this car, I thought the v-tec would be a hard swap due to the size. I heard the only swap possible would be the older integra like the 88. Besides that the v-tec are a bit larger or is the 88 integra a v-tec? Trying to stay with the easier fit. Would like to use the current stock motor mounts if possible. Cant be wasting few hundred on mounting harnass when the car was only like 400 bucks.
Also does anyone know if there are any comfortable seats I can fit in the 87 crx , not racing seats but something a bit more comfortable than these.. all the honda seats I sat in were uncomfortable but the type r were freaking amazing...
Thanks

Nope, The B series fit in there great, as you can see from the photo. If you want to stay with the SOHC VTEC you can also build a "mini me" SOHC VTEC engine, try doing some searches for "mini me"

If you have a 87 then you have a 1G CRX. A B series motor will fit with a Hasport mount kit, bits a tight squeeze but well worth it for the extra power. A 1st gen B16 swap will get you 160hp at the flywheel which will really make that 1G move! Add a few bolt on's such as i/h/e/cams/etc and you can expect a jump to around 170-175hp which is plenty for that lightweight car.
I have personally driven in a 1G CRX with a B series swap and they are really quick!

See that the thing.. Now you say a B series... will fit in the 1 gen crx.. i know the b16a1 89-91 sir-1 will fit but that isnt a v-tec spec right?
But will something like a 92-95b16a2 or a b16b which is a type r engine fit??
I know that the b18c1 wont fit which is a integra gsr because there will be absolutely no room..
This is what confused me.. because you say a b series would fit but to my knowledge not all Bseries are able to..
Am I wrong or right??

yes b16a1 is a vtec. the hasport kit will make pretty much any of those work I think. Welcome to the wonderful world of imports and to the Honda-tech family.
good luck with your car too. I used to have an 84 but wrecked it before I could do anything to it.
. Just go slow or better yet avoid hilly dirt roads if possible

there's another site that works with those older civic/crx's too. http://www.redpepperracing.com or something like that.
they're really lightweight and can take on a B series swap

First off just to correct you a b16b is not a Type-R(im not being an *** just giving you the right info)Theres a guy out here in Vegas that has a 1st gen CRX with a swap an ran a 12.7 or 12.6.....So the potential is there its just up to you to make it happen...One problem you have is that you jumped from a whole different world you've should have studied up on imports before trying to tackle one, but thats a little too late. Youve come to the right place to learn....Just remember when in doubt just ask and ignore those clowns that give you **** they re just monkeys with no common sense...Good Luck and welcome to the world of Imports

welcome to H-T and the import world. Words of advice, dont become a ricer
you are gonna have to change your mounts no matter what.
ZC - commonly used in Japan with integras/civics/crx's 130hp
b16a - 88-91 civic/crx SiR 160hp vtec- Japan
b16b - 98-00 civic typeR 186hp vtec- Japan
b18b - 92-01 integra 140hp - USA
b18c1 - " - " integra GSR 170hp vtec - USA or Japan SiR
b18c5 - 96-01 integra typeR 195hp vtec USA or 198hp Japan
wiring with the vtec's can be fun in those EA chassis hondas
any of these will be sweet. stay away from the older integra motor (88-89)
that **** is junk
personally I would go with the b16a SiR motor. cable clutch, obd0.
have fun with your swap.

b18a (integra ls 90-92 i believe) is also a good canidate for youre swap. it has decent torque (for a honda) stock and turbocharging it would give you power top-end. good luck and welcome to h-t. domestic

I actually like the look of a the early civic.....KEEP IT COMPLETELY STOCK! minus the suspension and motor..... Clean up the body, trims, interior, and paint the car. Get one of these http://hasport.com/shop/produc...id=28 and swap in a B16/B18 and you'll be having a blast in these go-carts. Going straight is wonderful, I'm building an Integra B18B turbo powered, daily driven, strip purpose car.......and a 1988 Civic Hatch for AutoX/RR purpose only...and a Toda/Hytech powered daily driven GSR.....once you get into this Honda world you'll know why everybody loves these cars. GOOD LUCK!
Thanks all for the welcome .. I was afraid people would be hostile due to the fact I was a domestic guy. Anyways Decided to go with the b16 for the swap if anyone has any comments or recommendations it might change my mind. Decided to go with these because it was the easier fit and Im the type of guy who needs the extra room in the engine compartment in order to put EXTRA parts... More hints would be helpful thought
Thanks again
Thanks again
b16 sounds like fun. may i recomend ITB's and a fully built all motor set-up.
the more air and fuel you can get through that little ***** the better
and high compression is your friend.

so u were able to fit a zc in a gen 1? amazing did you having to get motor mount harass.. where you get and how much... ??? since you did a zc would you recommend the zc? Hows the performance?
i found that off the red pepper site .. its not hard to put a DOHC motor in a 1st gen zc or other wise.. the wiring and tight space is going to be your biggest issue. just research the wiring and installation process and when you feel comportable .. put one in

Erick Aguilar is currently campaiging a 1st generation CRX. It was on the cover of the February/March 2004 Drag Sport magazine. He has a swap in there, and runs in the 10s in natural aspirated form. You could contact him at EricksRacing.com, also Hasport might make a mount kit to fit B-Series motors in that chassis. Search around also.
