"Rota's website says it weighs 14 lbs" is not proof. "My buddy has them on his car and it was faster after he put them on" is not proof. "The Mach III website says it weighs 13.5 lbs" is not proof. A picture of a 16" Slip sitting on a bathroom scale is not proof.

BTW if anyone needs proof that a Konig Helium 15" x 6.5" really weighs less than 10.6 lbs, I can give that to you in exchange -

Well, those people would be stupid, since Rota wheels are manufactured for them BY Konig!!!

The reason I'm looking for an exact weight on the 16" Slips is because I believe it's the cheapest and lightest wheel in a 16" size that I can use on my Accord, which needs a 4 x 4.5" bolt pattern.

I know I can get Kosei K1's in a 16" x 7.5" that would prob. very close, maybe lighter than the Slipstreams, but they are more $ and not available in a flat black finish . . .

 

How expensive are those Heliums in 15 x 6.5?

where did you get this info? last i checked rotas were manufactured in the philipines and konig, germany.

i take it back, mixed up konig with borbet... so konig wheels are made in the philipines?

Damn, i didnt think a Konig was that light. But I have some concerns. The Konig helium is a replica of the Volk Racing CE28N. the Volk in 15X6.5 weighs in at about 9 lbs. The Konig is a very respectable 10.6 lbs but the wheel is not forged, it is CAST. This makes me think that a cast wheel this light and cheap may have strength issues. A cast wheel is much more brittle than a forged wheel, especially if the spokes are not supportive enough. I guess we will find out if ppl start bending their Konigs.

Those are very good points. No doubt the Konig wheel is not as strong as the CE28N. I have a friend who bent two Heliums on the street getting a little sideways and then getting up on a curb. No idea if a forged wheel would have survived that scenario or not.

But I think it's still a pretty good deal, considering that at $99 each or so, the Helium is pretty much a disposable wheel (as long as it's not weak to the point of being unsafe).

Rota's are mfg'd by Philippine Aluminum Wheels, Inc. (PAWI) NOT Konig.

Konig is a subsidiary of Pan Mar Corporation which is backed by Guevent Group of Companies which is located in Phillipines also but not the same company as PAWI

But would you agree with me that Konig and Rota wheels are of equivalent quality (ie pretty damn good for the price) ?

 

$111 each at Discount Tire Direct right now; I think that includes shipping too. Maybe the prices have gone up; I got mine for $99 a while back (almost a year ago now I think).

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about cast vs. forged. A proper heat treat can give the wheels an acceptable level of rigidity. Ex. I'd wager money that the Civic HX wheels are not forged, they aren't having any failure problems that I've heard of.

In my opinion, wheels should be cheap and expendable. They take a hell of a beating.

Sorry I don't have any weights for the Rotas.

 

well i weighed my 16" rota grids on 2 of my bathroom scales and both came in at 14.5 lbs, give or take .1

They work as my secondary autocross rims pretty well and have survived a couple potholes without bending any spokes so far. Of course they're not as strong as a forged wheel, but as the saying goes, racing wheels: cheap, light, strong... you pick two.

 

Nothing wrong with cast wheels unless you want to drive off buildings making stunt scenes for movies, or if you enjoy side slapping curbs I guess

Think about this - if your forged wheel was not killed by hitting the curb sideways, would you not want to replace it after having half of it hacked up (aesthetically) against the concrete?

heliums sure do look nice without tires.. and not mounted on a car.. and without cracks in their spokes..
