90 Civic base model smog
Hi All,
Let me start by saying that I have read some of the smog posts already. My old 1990 Civic is the base model with no options (ok, floor mats) and no mods and 150,000 on the odometer. The guy at the gas station said I had an exhaust leak. I failed smog on NO and here are my readings:
NO (ppm)
15 mph, Max(835), Ave (237), Meas(1066) FAIL
25 mph, Max(774), Ave (199), Meas(743) PASS
The other figures are approx 50% below the maximum. I get another retest for free in the next 30 days so from what I gathered on the other post I should try:
- change the oil
- use higher octane gas
- add fuel injector cleaner to my gas
- drive the car really hard before going for the smog check
- remove the air filter before testing
- (there was other more techincal stuff that I don't know how to do or what it is like spark plug gaps...etc).
I need to get it to pass smog (as cheaply as possible) so I can drive to work legally. So what are the other things that I should do (please keep in mind I don't know much about cars) to increase my odds of passing smog (besides trying to bribe the guy at the station).
Please help.
Thank you for your time.
