what's this god-awful rattle??
ok, i just went from a stock rattling GSR header to a 96-97 ITR header and cat on my 95 GSR. of course, the downpipe is longer on the ITR, so i had my exhaust shortened by tuffy. everything is bolted up.
last night i'm driving around (fast) with a passenger and all of a sudden we hear this noise...like we threw up a rock or something, and i hit against the bottom of the car and flew out the back, and about 5 minutes later the rear end start rattling and vibrating like crazy. my friend thought i lost an exhaust bolt, but i just checked and they're all there, and they're all tight.
what else should i look for?? this is SOO ANNOYING!

oh, and i should mention that it doesn't rattle til the engine gets warmed up. when the engine is cold, it sounds fine, like nothing is wrong. and when the engine is al warmed up and shift, in between shifts, it makes this noise like something is clanking together. like when the motor moves back and forth when i shift...thats when it happens. and just cruising at a constant speed when the engine is warm, it sounds like the exhaust or something is constantly hitting something else, and it just rattles at pretty much any speed and rpm.
no, its something rattling against some part of the car. i can hear and just about feel the chassis vibrating. its somewhere near the axleback.

i can't move it with my hand. its too firmly in place. and there's no heat shield in the rear of the car...is there?? i don't think there is. there's no heat shield on my exhaust manifold. and the heat shield for the cat doesn't touch the exhaust.
what heat shield are you guys referring to?

I think they're talking about the heat shield over the cat

IMO opinion this is not really a question you should post, it sounds like a guess and check type question. the name of the part is not really what you need to know. just put the car on a lift, go over it inch by inch. have someone sit inside and give it throttle intermittently. i also think your question is a bit too vague for us to answer. just my 2 cents.
The pipe inside my resonator is broken/cracked and will be noisy after it warms up. Couldn't locate it until an oil change... took a hammer and hit everywhere on the exhaust and it finally rattled after I hit the resonator. Put it up on a lift while warm and start banging around, you'll find where it's coming from.

whatever noob. i'll post what i want, and this is a perfectly fine thing to post about, because i HAVE checked and i still don't know where it's coming from. and i can't "just put my car on a lift" because 1) i don't have access to a lift, 2) my money is tight, and 3) i don't have time. and i've had a friend give it throttle while i tried to get up under the car, but it didn't rattle. it doesn't rattle if i'm sitting still, it only rattles when the car is in motion. and i don't think my question is too vague. if it was, no one would know what i'm talking about, and i wouldn't be getting answers.
and to the other guy who said it could be the intake rattling agains the throttle body, i don't think thats it. i can def tell its coming from the back of the car. you know that sound a car makes when someone's system is pounding and it rattles the deck lid in their coupe or sedan? well one of the rattles sounds like that. the other sounds like its under the car and right behind me. i'll check into the heat shield above the cat a little deeper tho. thanks for your ideas tho. keep 'em coming guys.

Don't come on here and ask for help and act like a little bitch when someone answers your question. Yes, you hear a rattling when you are driving at high speeds, yes this is not vague at all... Grow up.
troublecodes and 707 eclipse are idiotic n00bs. this is a total tech. question and all of us knew what he was talkin about, except u 2 noobs *just my 2 cents*
I think there's two heat shields over the exhaust piping. I think I remember removing two in a search for an annoying rattle. You might want to try getting rid of them. Also, is your exhaust hanging properly? The source of my rattle was from my exhaust hitting my LCA because it wasn't hanging correctly.
Hey Train, slightly OT, but just want to know if you noticed any difference swapping to the 96-97 ITR Header? Im assuming its the JDM 4-2-1. Ive got one laying around, but dunno if its worth putting it on.

yup that's what it is. my car's rattling too 3 months after i bought an aftermarket cat converter from autozone. that's what it is your cat converter.

i'm not acting like a bitch, i'm acting in my defense when someone comes on here and tells me this shouldn't be posted. this forum is for people helping out other people with problems. i have a problem, and i'm trying to find an answer. and when you said i'm saying i hear a rattling when i'm driving at high speeds...thats not what i said AT ALL. dumbass. anyone can take any question, no matter how specific, break it down in pieces, and say its vague.

thank you DOHC VTEC eaaater for sticking up for me.
alfaaay, i'll look into the clearance between the piping or muffler and the LCA.
aj008, to be honest, i didn't expect any gains, but i did notice a bit. i have an AEM CAI and a cat back exhaust, and i guess this ITR header flows slightly more than my GSR header. i guess it should flow more, but i didn't expect to notice much. its not like bolting up real header tho. if you've got one laying around and you're bored one day, yeah, i'd throw it on. and yeah, its the 96-97 JDM ITR 4-2-1 header.
deaaye9 and patrickGSR94, i'll pop the cat off and take a look at that too.
thanks to the people that stuck to the topic and want to give a helping hand.
