Many things can cause it, you will probably get worse gas mileage by using higher octane gas. It tends to evaporate faster. It could also be due to clogged injectors, a heavier weight motor oil, etc etc. There are a million things that can effect mileage, like letting your car idle for a long period of time, or driving it in the city more than the highway one week.

yep a million things... like low tire pressure, dirty air filter, anything that restricts the car from performing like it should... i would check those also.

assuming you have high mileage. your pistions might have a little blow-by and your valves may not be seating properly. have your compression check

I find that when your just cruising higher octane gas gives you better MPGs. I believe this is because you dont have to put quite as much load on the engine when gently accelerating, whereas low octanefuel you have to give it that little bit more gas when accelerating gently.

Ive seen it alot where cars with clogged air filters drink fuel and are less responsive

Id check that out first but like most eople have said theres a million things that can affect it and they all add up.
