CRX Stereo Illumination Q
I just purchased a sony CDXM-630 for my crx. It has an illumination input wire. SO I hooked it up.
I turned it on for the first time and then i wanted to see this illumination and how it worked so I turn the lights on to the first dot. (parking/interior illumination). the display dimmed a little.. ok.. so I turn the headlights all the way on and the unit turns off, then turns back on.
anyone have any ideas??

i thought thats what it is supposed to do.
when you turn your lights on it gets dimmer that way your stereo doesn't blind you at night. your clock...if you got one from Honda...will also dim when you turn your lights on.
as for the whole unit turning off when you turn the lights all the way on...i don't know, but im pretty sure you messed up the wiring job. that shouldn't happen. check all your wires make sure you have a good connection on all of them. if the problem persists bring the radio back...it may be defective.

I didnt mess up the wiring. I've messed around w/ stereo's more then enought. It's 100% wired correctly.

well if its all hooked up correctly then that shouldn't be happening. my first thought is wiring because well thats the only thing you really can mess up when installing a radio...right?
when you turn the lights on full the radio turns off and then powers back up as if nothing happened? or is it more like radio on...turn on lights...radio powers down...and then restarts the display but its still off... know what i mean?
if you did everything 100% then i would say you have a defective device and i would bring it back and get another one...

ok.. here are the steps of this problem
- key to acc position
- stereo on
- 1st position of lights on; stereo dims
- 2nd position of lights on; stereo turns off and then back on and works fine.

sounds like a short in the switch or a problem with the headunit. we quit carring Sony because we had too many problems with them.
the easiest way to check for a short is to hook up a mulitmeter to the illumiation wire and see what it reads with the lights on and off and the ingition on and off try combutaions of both and let me know the readings and i'll tell you if there is a short or not.

ok.. got some new info here. it's not the illumination doing it!
I disconnected the illum wire and turn the car to acc. The stereo came on. I turn the lights to AUX and the stereo stayed on. I turn the headlights on and the stereo turns off, then turns back on, the illum wire is not connected!?! WTF!
I disconnected the Main stereo power (not the constant, the switched) and did a voltage test. the car is not running
acc lights all off = 11.3v
acc aux lights on = 10.8v
acc lights on full, no high beam = 10.55v (this is when the stereo would turn off.)
wtf!?

ok.. i think i've got it figured. The battery is kinda low on juice and the initial shock of the high draw accessories such as headlights
dips the voltage below operating ranges for the unit only momentarily. I'm going to leave it as is until i daily drive the rex again. If it's still a lil low on voltage (always been around 10v w/ all accessories running) i will go get myself a optima.
brings me to another question.
optima blue, red or yellow? the new compact version or regular big version?

if you do a re locate to the trunk get as big of a battery you can if you are running or plan to run class ab or d amps then get a yellow top (deep cycle) if not then all you need is a red top (starting power). if you keep it in the stock location then you'll have to go with a yellow top because i think they only make a yellow top that will fit in our stock locations.
Also try upgrading your charge wire from your altinator(sp) that will help recharge your battery better. Also upgrade all of your grounds.
