Default OCTAINE requirements for B16A1 with stock compression?

What are the recomended fuel octain requirements for a B16A1, And don't SAY 93 automaticly. The is an optimum, and any more is a waste of money, and makes less power. I.E. 93 octaine in a car that runs 87 does not help it make more power.

93 is not going to make more power in any motor that specifies 87. What did honda specify for this motor, besides did you price 93 octaine recently? Motor runs well and is quiet with 87 but not sure the ECU is not compensating VIA the knock sensor.

vtec requires "premium unleaded gasoline"

people have told me that they run on 89 octane with no problems. in fact one guy said that his mpg was much higher with 89 vs. 91

despite this, i only run 93 octane in my b16. at the end of the day why skimp on a few cents per gallon and risk hurtin ur motor.

check out the 2nd quote in ur sig. If u wanna use 87 octane get some d15 power.

I ran 87 in my car one time. And it started pinging. So its 93 for me at all times. And with a JDM motor, remember that the gas is cleaner in Japan. They use RON, which I believe would equal out to about 96 octane here.

well like I said I had no idea what the motor was speced to run. Because I know with a knock sensor on the motor the ECU will retard timing to try to stop it with subsequent loss of power. right now there is almost 20 cents a gallon price differential. Mine hasn't knocked but thats only because I have an unchipped PR3 and am using all the sensors. Too much ocatian is a waste of money, but just enough is perfect, if you know what just enough is. Ouch 93 octaine is gonna hurt. Price wise, the drop in MPG to 25 is killing me from the DOHC ZC I used to have (that got 34 with ZC box). Guess the saving grace is I have a Y-1 instead of an S-1 or I would be seeing 20mpg.

that's what happened to me, i put in some 87 octane, and my car started to bog like crap, so i just drained the shiet and put 94 octane in it, or 91,92
-> neva again, but yeah, JDM motors have higher octane levels due it being cleaner.

I have an S-1, mpg is killing me. 25 mostly, about 4k rpm at 70mph I think

I'd rather suck it up and pay .20$ per gallon more, than another $600 plus shipping for a stock B16 motor. Believe me, i smell that extra gas coming out the exhaust, but I'm safe.

cant go fast without sacrificing something. I got an S1 that gets about 20 mpg. i use 93 only though. you can get away with 89 fine. but i like using the good stuff.

i ran 93 in mine at all times. you need to remember that the gas in japan land is alot higher of a rating then ours and a whole different kind of rating system.

Rule of thumb is to use the lowest octane rating that your engine will run without knocking (predetonating). Anything more is just wasting money, anything less will continue knocking and potentially cause engine damage later on. B16A engines have knock sensors, which will sense predetonation and adjust ECU settings to eliminate it. However, the engine not run to its full potential this way.

The B16A engine requires "premium" unleaded fuel, as stated in my 2000 Civic owner's manual. This means a minimum of 91 octane (91 PON, since we use the PON rating system in the United States). I have to use 93, since the only fuels sold in my area are 87, 89, 93, and 94 PON.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by regime &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i ran 93 in mine at all times. you need to remember that the gas in japan land is alot higher of a rating then ours and a whole different kind of rating system.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Their gas isn't "a lot higher of a rating." It is just measured differently (RON); they actually have nearly the same fuel grades as we do. This is a common misconception.

Read here for some clarification on the subject. You can see that our 91 PON fuel is actually equivalent to their 95 RON fuel.

89-91 with stock motor.
I only ever ran 91 on mine but 89 will work just fine. if you get cams or anything that raises the compression even more than a tad use 91 or 91 + octane booster.

in a old *** stock b16a 1st gen your fine with 89+ 87 would be kinda pushing it if your in a humid climate but 87 should be fine none the less.

haha save some money on the gas for some go fast parts...

I use 91 on my b16a but if u look at the manual for 91 crx vtec it states that 95 RON is to be used which in turn means 91 on the (R+M)/2 method in CA and its $2.34 here for 91 and i drive about 40 a day to work on a J1 tranny that hurts at 80 i am at about 5000 rpm so i do 65 to try to save gas. At http://icelord.net/honda/repai...0.pdf
If u look at the bottom of the paige were it says engine u will see what i am talking about.

well for a 1st gen b16a1 jdm, the shop manuel i have says it requires 91 octane fuel.
lol on my car as it is now, a month ago i didnt have too much money and 94 ocatne gas(which i put in all the time) here in Toronto costs 88 cents a liter, so i put in 87 octane, lol BIG MISTAKE

ok knock CITY, car vobrating, hesittaion and had freaking fireballs comming from my exhuast, my tip on my exhuast is stainless, clean looking. ok now its BLACK and yellow because of that lol, so bad.

then i put in 94 2 days later and my car ran like ***, has 2 reset the ecu and she pulled good once again, but yeah u kill ur motor whebn u put **** gas in, why would you do that? if u have no $ ok but if u can afford it, ur killing ur motor with shitty gas

On average I fill up 10gal a week, thats $2 a week, $8 a month, $96 a YEAR over regular. Premium gas is not a huge wallet breaker here...lots of people act like premium is liquid gold, put the 91-93 in, the extra bucks is worth it.

Edit : just fyi I dont put 93 in my ZC, I was simply using it as example for the price difference.

i always put 1 gallon of 100 octane, and fill it the rest of the way up with 91... i can smell a little gas at times, but it runs smoother than with only 91...
