help - engine tick from h22a4 - troubleshoot
i recently pulled the valve cover - when replacing it, i got a fairly good amount of oil got into the #3 cylinder through the spark plug hole (devoid of plug). i sucked out as much oil as i could, but there is still prob a bit left in there. i started motor, and tick-tick-tick-tick (as fast as rpms) coming from motor near #3 cylinder.
i pulled the spark plug for a sec and it had a good coat of oil on it. there is only a lil left in there but i dunno what to do to get it out! please help
it was suggested to me to pour a lil bit of water into each cylinder through spark plug hole and then run motor for a bit to kind of "steam clean" the engine and break some carbon off from the inside of the exhaust. i am going to try this if i dont get any better ideas.

dude if you pour water into teh cylinders i think that will blow the thingup, If it were me id just clean off the spark plug and put it back in there and let the cylinder burn the oil off, dont pour anything else in their, last time i check water doesnt really clean oil
Water Doesn't combust
Water Doesn't combust
the water idea came from a pretty reliable source - he mean just a lil water not a lot, but if you say its a bad idea, than maybe thats it.
however, could this ticking noise from cylinder 3 be something else maybe? im pretty sure the oil is the prob - would not firing due to oil in the cylinder cause a ticking noise?

the ticking noise might just be your valves so i would check those... but definetly do not pour water into you cylinders you WILL kill your motor, like stated above water does not combust nor does it compress...
Prolly not valves - before i pulled the valve cover, everything ran ok - while it was off, i didnt touch valves - then when i put the cover back on, the ticking began. im pretty sure its the cylinder not firing because of the wee bit of oil in it... but not positive
might just need a valve adjustment...I read a lot on searches for this problem because i have the SAME issue...I'm having a friend do my timing belt and auto tensionors this weekend and will do the valve adjustment at the same time...The belts wont effect it obviously but PM me your email address I'll let you know if the valve adjustment took care of the ticking...Therefore you wont burn a lot of money on different tests...
I want to know is your car smoking at all when YOU get on. If so oil is getting into ur cyclinder (you probably knew that) . I had that same problem and one of the reasons was the gasket around the spark plugs were bad and oil was was sliping through the threads. I would check that.

bump bump bump does anyone else have an idea 'bout what else i can do to solve this problem?
also, does anyone have a good writeup of, or know the url of a good writeup for valve adjustment clearances for a 97-01 prelude? im pretty sure the exhaust and intake clearances are around .007 - .008, but i dont want to guess. i'd like it perfect.
thanks for the help

Whoever told you that should be shot.
As stated before you should check your valve lash.
