Default more problems (axles) :(

So I fixed my radiator last week. While I was under the car I checked the CV boots and they were fine, although the inner boots on both sides have been spraying grease for some time. Today I bled my brakes again because my pedal was feeling a bit spongy after I flushed the brake fluid last week, so that seems to be better now, but I noticed that my driver side inner CV boot is now torn all the way around into 2 pieces. These are the original axles at 160K miles.

I planned on replacing the axles this summer, but I realllllly don't have time to replace it right now, and really can't afford it either, although I guess I'll just charge it if I really have to. Graduation is approaching and I'm trying to bust my butt to get my projects finished. I have not experienced any vibration at speed or anything yet. Am I in any imminent danger of something happening that could leave me stranded somewhere?

I also need to replace my water pump (also original at 160K) and will probably go ahead and change my timing belt at the same time (changed at 90K, so current one has 70K on it now).

And I need new tires.

And I need a new brake master cylinder.

And I need to get rid of these #^#$@!# POS H&R Sport springs.

Damn, too much stuff at once.

You can drive it for awhile with the inner boots torn so don't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it untill they start clicking when you take turns. The grease is annoyance especially right after you clean your rims but they should hold up for a little longer. Even though Autozone sucks they sell axles for around $100 and they have a lifetime warranty.

My problem is the inner joints, they don't click when you turn. When they start to give out you get a nasty vibration at speed when the throttle is open (drivetrain under load).

i replaced my axles (159K ) a week after i got my car...i replaced the passenger side it and it looked like this

the only problem you'll encounter is the crazy noise when you get on the throttle... i never experienced any crazy shaking or anything like that, but the noise was loud and scary enough for me to go ahead and replace it

I feel the same way all the time. Try not to look at the entire situation all at once, but rather focus on one thing at a time - hammer it out and move on to the next issue.. keep your long term goals in mind but don't overwhelm yourself.

well they're not goals per say, it's just stuff that needs to be repaired or replaced because it's worn out or broken.

i replaced my orig axles around 163,000.
i was geting the 'crazy shaking' though.
My CV's had been torn for a long time and I just kept putting it off. I ended up having to pay to get it done b/c it was sooo cold outside in January.
heh... had my brake master cylinder go out around 150,000 as well.

eh yea I feel ya. I had to replace both axles too at 78000 miles. The cv boot were ripped open eh. I probably spent at least $600+ on stock parts because they were either broken or worn out. Eh that's what happens when you drive an old car.
