Never heard of this before but Im interested. Can you still get reception some other way if you dont run the mechanical antenna?

Always wondered if you could just directly connect the wires to the car, so you can use all that metal for reception...

No you cant. The antenna cable is a coax cable and the outer braid is already grounded to the car body. If you ground the center wire, it would act like a short making reception even worse (That is if you had any reception to begin with, without the antenna)
