Default 4ws problems again

posted up here botu a month ago, about 4ws problem - it would come on rondomly, about 2-3weeks after last reset, pull fuse/battery to reset and this it's alright again for those 2-3 weeks. doesnt seem to be caused by anything.

it came on last night, and drove the 60mile home with 4ws light on, and just gave it a blink code reading.

i`m a BIT confused to what the 4ws light is telling me.
heres what i do...
ignition off
bridge wire on 2pin plug under dash
ignition on
4ws light on (as a selftest type thing), then off for a couple of secs (approx 2-3secs)
around 25 very rapid blinks lasting 3secs or so (~5blinks/sec)
2secs light off
2 long blinks, and 5secs of light off.
25 rapid blinks again, and the 2 long blinks again.

i`m guessing this is fault code 20, and the 25rapid blinks are just telling you it's the end/beginning of the blinkcodes stored.

i`ve read that harsh driving can cause 4ws to go t*ts up, but i cant see why they put the 2.2 vtec in it, if it's not meant to be driven somewhat quickly.
also, the 4ws light ONLY comes on, when ignition is turned on. it has not yet come on when driving (4ws light been on 4-5times now)
and 1 more thing, i noticed on the drive home last night, that the steering would be out after i turned corners. afaik, 4ws has a failsafe where it will lock in 'deadcentre'. after i turn i find the steering wheel will be out 10-15degs, then it will straighten up by itself within 0.5mile. would this sugest 4wheel tracking required? at a guess i`d say that the turn would somehow reset the rear wheels, but when driving in a stright line, it's pulling the rear wheels out of gemetry?

Code 25 is listed as: Rear sub,Rear mainangle sensor, 4ws Control Unit, Harness connector.

And fron what you describe itsound like the4ws system may need re-configuring otherwise it may be possible that the actuator has gone bad!

The harsh drivingconditionyou talk of are listed as beingthings like:
*Parking against a kurb preventing rearsto turn
*cant remember others off-hand

where do you get the info from, for blink codes for 4ws?

i DONT think it is code 25 - cuz the blinks are far to fast to count (5blinks per second) - i`m thinking it's code 20, 2long blinks, and 0 short blinks.

and harse driving again - i take it corning hard, h/brake turns (it was snowing recently in the UK - gotta have some fun in carparks) it can cope with.

and the 4ws light comes on every 2-3weeks. surely if it was the control unit, harness connector or angle sensor it would come on at totally random intervals? are there minor faults that will only put the light on after XX startups of the car, or if theres a fault, the light will come on there and then?

It means code 20 : front main or front secondary sensor.

I had the same problem. In my case it was a faultly main sensor (located under steering wheel).

But don't ask a honda dealer for the price, find a good used one, replace and test.

Also ring around the uk breaker yard as youll tend to find they ask forlike double the priceon everything, and barter your heartout; I got a full cradle, front suspension, calipers, rotors etc etc for 350 pounds!!

Hey I have a front sub steering angle sensor lying around if that is needed, And theyre the manuels Ive also D'loaded

Code20 is listed as
*Front Sub sensor
*Front Main
*4ws Control unit
*HarnessConnector

Before you go buying sensors, firstly check all the wires are hooked up on thecontrolunit (under theremovable 'card' like cover in the boot) then also check the front sub steering angle sensor is connected still and that the connector is not damaged/missing

Here are some pics of driverside rear of the underside of the enginebay showingthe blue connector that leeds to the Front Sub-sensor that is mounted on the steering rack.

Have you had your battery disconnected/replaced recently??

Assoon as you started the ignition after it being disconnected did you turn full lock right then full left?

You mustdo that so the 4wsECU can learn where the centre point is for the front sensors!

That may be the issue, try disconnecting it again, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect then do the above. start engine, rull lock right then full lock left then It should be setup fine.

Check that then tell whow it went

My experiences show that you must wait about 2-3 minutes to clear fault codes from a 4WS ecu, instead of engine ECU - in its case 30 seconds is enough.

If you will not wait these 2-3 minutes you will see all the fault codes again after reconecting (at least it was like this in my case).
