Default this piston look right?

Pulled the head after 5k miles.. few problems were cam gear allens got a little loose.. driver drove about a week on it slowly getting more and more fkd until it finally got real bad (like the gear backed off as far as it could) - and started running real bad..

anyway, to the point.. shown is a pic of the piston with the carbon deposits, something i've never run into before. Is this condition caused by retarded timing, ie extremely backed off gears, or anything else i'm not thinking of? These are brand new pistons in a 4-5k mile setup.. Thanks so much in advance!

the piston itself looks fine but make sure you clean all the carbon **** off. it's deffinently caused by the bad timing. make sure you double check everything and clean everything. i don't know if you'll have to replace and vavlves or anything. you might have burnt ones. if someone could let him know about that.

from the pic you see no scratches on the
cylinder wall
so it could have been deposits from break in and bad timming.

thanks for the replies.. i just wanted to make sure it wasn't that big of a deal and mainly get an idea of wth happened.. the new block went in fine today, just wanted to make sure everything ended up okay on the 'old' one.. i chalked the carbon deposits up to the severely backed off timing, and head and valves turned out just fine! thanks again for the posts!
