I have a stripped out oil pan. does anyone know of a way of getting the drain plug out? the drain plug turns and turns but never catches on the thread. Also, was wondering if anyone had an oil pan for sale in case i can't get the drain plug off. Thanks for the help.

 

Clamp a pair of vice grips on the bolt and pull while unscrewing, it should catch. Hopefully it'll be the bolt that is stripped and not the pan. If the pan is stripped drill and tap the next size up drain bolt. Next time don't over tighten.

Try to downgrade a socket size to 16mm and get it on the bolt tightly, you might be able to take the drain bolt off. If that does not work, I would resort to buying the bolt remover kit that craftsman sells

It's a drain bolt that makes new threads as you screw it in.

 

bump.. i finally got off the bolt, thanks to a trusty screwdriver.. now i'm off to auto zone to get a 17mm drian bolt and washer... i hope that it was just the bolt that was stripped.... that would make my weekend....

Dammit, the guy gave me the wrong size drian plug. now i gotta go back, how annoying, i looked at the thread of the oil pan...it doesn't look stripped, but the bolt definetely was. hope i'm right. bump

That idea always made me cringe. I couldn't help but think of shavings left behind from the threads that it cut.

But I guess they do seem to work quite well. Lots of people seem to have no trouble with them.

well u are right to cringe. after you put the bolt in you MUST stick a magnet in there and try to pick up all the shavings.... but i think all, if not most if them have the magnet on the end so after you tighten it take it back out and clean off the magnet. if your really worried i would run some clean oil through it to help grab some shavings and wash it out.

 

Replace it with a magnetic drain bolt
