non 4ws to 4ws
Has any one ever converted their non 4ws innto a 4ws prelude?, just out of curiousity, wouldnt you need to change the entire rear suspension and the ECU?
thanx, just curious

g4 4ws is standalone. you'd need angle, speed, etc sensors. butt load of work. i wouldn't think its worth it anywho. i have the 4ws and don't particularly like it with autocross. the rear rack is too slow to react on the twisties of a small scca course. road courses may be different. i've yet to try one.
All of the rear suspension arms and links are different. I also believe there are extra mounting points on the chasis. You'll need a steering rack from a 4WS lude as you'll need the sensor in there, and u'll need the separate wheel speed sensors. You'll also need the 4WS computer (which has 48 wires going to it) as well as the rear steering rack. There is also a motor under the car for power to the tie rods. So if your up for it, you could try it but from what i've heard, it's a pain in the ***!!

WERD.

I have a 1992 4WS prelude and I had some problems with 4WS system, due to these problems I was even thinking about removing it, so I can say I know it in details.
Even the conversion 4WS -> 2WS pose many problems.
The 4WS car differs from a 2WS one:
1. Rear suspension : an electrically controlled gearbox with ties and tie ends, the bracket under the car (don't know exact english name, I mean the rear suspension frame) is different to hold the gearbox in place. There are also 2 sensors on the rear gearbox - main rear steering sensor and secondary rear steering sensor (the secondary was discontinued in 5 gen).
2. Front gearbox is different: it has a sensor mounted in (called by honda secondary front steering sensor), I am not sure, but I think the gearbox ratio is different comparing to 2WS ones.
3. Under the steering wheel there is a complicated front main sensor unit: I looked inside, it is full or electronic chips and parts inside.
4. The 4WS control unit (a big box, size of a big shoe box) in the cargo. A new on costs about 2000 euro + 22% TAX .... !!!!!
5. The ABS unit is different and is connected to 4WS unit by 2 additional inexisting on 2WS version terminals (probably to let the ABS include the current angle of rear wheels when calculating wheel speed, and (or?) to inform the 4WS system if the ABS has activated on rear wheels???)
6. The ECU is different (yes, don't say that it is the same!!!). On the side of P13 or P14 ECU there is a mark 2W or 4W meaning 2WS or 4WS car. Some time ago I have asked what is difference inside the ECU, nobody has answered...
7. The instrument cluster is differen: it has an additional orange 4WS light (located on the opposite side of SRS light).
And of course a lot of electrical wires...

Although the 4G 4ws system is a dream to cruise and park with, If you turn the wheel VERY fast and a set angle is met, the rear wheels will turn the Opposite way to the front resulting in the car diving Very fast.
This does only happen when your tuning the wheel sharpe but can have Very bad consequences.
Im sure a couple of 4ws'ers who really test their car can vouch for that (JZ for one)
