Default Check out these twisties....

I would love to one day take the R on this road

http://www.tailofthedragon.com/maps/DRAGONmap.gif

It's called the Tail of the Dragon and they actually close this 13+ mile road off for special events for bikes/automobiles.

Just thought this was kinda interesting.

Yeah, it's a hell of a lot of fun. I personally like certain other roads better because I think Deal's Gap is a little too slow at times. Also check out Highway 9 between Bat Cave and Black Mountain NC, fun and extremely fast.

I think there are 317 curves in 11 miles at Deal's Gap.

Been there, done that

Great road, don't take passengers who are prone to carsickness.

I hear the police are cracking down these days. Not that there are many sections where the non-insane driver will get over the posted limit anyway

yup.. and they are good enough to get bikes..... a yellow/black/white Acura = easy pickings.

my last time there was low key (might have been the last time)...
the time before that a biker was killed by a RV...
the time before that a ITR almost died...
the time before that I ride with someone (RX-7 GTUs) and got sick 'bad'...
the time before that two ITR's were wrecked and had to be towed home...
the time before that I was there with the ITR for the first time and p0ped b-tech all over the place...
the time before that I was following a Yugo (at night in the Volvo) on the way to Knoxville (OMG)...
the time before that I was there in the Volvo on RA-1's... (passing bikes is cool)
the time before that (my first) I was in awe at the most beautiful road ever created...

been there too see avatar

last two times i've been down with the subie's we've lost two cars each time...
last year an SVX rolled on the skyway and an XT6 caught a biker head-on
two years ago a WRX and a legacy went off on 129 - both on the downhill side. trees saved both of them from going more than 20-30' down the side of the mountain. the night before we arrived that year a biker hit some wildlife and lost his legs, and the day of our wrecks at least three other bikes wrecked. That area is NOT a place to try and prove something, or try to drive at 100% it's just as fun and challenging at 35mph as it is at 65mph.

Don't forget the two bike crashes while we were near/there. Ambulance coming down the NC side at top speed on our way up, and the other bike a good 50 feet off the road

Sorry about the Big Pic.
The "Gap" was fun, but you do need to be relatively careful!!!

Yep, the little gas station/convenience store/motel at the beginning on the NC side. I'll try to dig up a pic or two.

There is a road far into the SF East Bay that is probably pretty close to this road. It bascially goes from San Jose to Livermore - it is 50 miles long with not a single town along the way (and only a dozen or so houses). I had to stop driving it because I was scaring myself.

Also of note - the stickers can only be bought at the gas station - they do not do mail order, so you actually have to drive the dragon to obtain them

wouldnt it be better to go to a track event then to risk wrecking or dying in such road ..
or even getting caught by the cops ...
