94 Accord EX -- ignition issues
1994 Honda Accord EX, automatic
This car is completely stock with 124,000 miles. The problems are as follows:
-- When the engine is cold, especially in cold weather it pings a lot.
-- When the engine is warm, usually only in warm weather, it knocks a lot.
I've taken it to a couple of mechanics and nobody really ever gives me a straight answer as far as what's causing the problem. At first, I thought that was because they didn't want to share information with me for whatever reason. However, the problem has never really been solved. The belts were all changed at 100K miles. The timing has been adjusted. They've run fuel injector cleaner through it. (Not the stuff you pour in the gas tank but they hook an bottle up to the fuel rail, let it run for 20 minutes and then blow all the smoke out the back.) The distributor and plugs were replaced, not plug wires though. I didn't pass emissions a few months ago (barely) but I had the catalytic convertor replaced and that fixed that.
Some more knowledgeable friends of mine say that it sounds like it's running too lean, meaning too much air not enough fuel. That would cause it to run hot, explain the knocking, and cause emissions problems. My question is this: how do I find a good mechanic that will give the straight scoop and fix the problem? I'm in the Portland/Beaverton, Oregon area.
Also, what are some good online parts shops for Hondas?

you might want to consider taking it to a dealership--however we all know that they are expensive, but they might be able to better diagnose your problem. just my opinion though.
