Default Help a noob/ricer out (lowering)

I have never lowered a car or anything.. so I am a noob to that. I am going to put some 18s on my 99 Civic EX and didn't know what exactly I should get for it. (call me a ricer, I don't care.. I like the 18s. If you flame me for it.. you are just wasting your time, cause I don't care). I have been using the search a lot and found that the maxspeed coilover are pretty good for the price. I also noticed that the H&R springs are supposed to be pretty good. Will the springs even work with a tire as big as the 18s? Will the car even need to be lowered at all? Also, will I need new shocks, cause my car doesn't ride that great as it is. Will I need a Camber kit?

Thanks guys.. I appreciate it.

if your looking for a cheap decent suspension go with ground control coiloves and KYB gr-2 struts. thats what I have rides pretty good for the 500 bones I have in it.

stop being an ******* n00b!
ground controls or some other type of sleve over design would be a good choice.

I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on the lowering itself, but I wouldn't mind if it rode a little better. Would it be alright if I just put the H&R springs on it with stock struts and no camber?

ignorant.

this is actually a tech question and deserves better answers.

EDIT: you'll probably need new struts if your coilover/spring settings are too soft. With 18" rims, your tires will likely to rub your fenders unless you do this.

haah I'm sorry guys..but ya with 18's not only are you making the car look horrible, but you're gunna be getting horrible gas mileage and making your car slower than it already is..so I'd think twice before getting 18's!

you may rub a lot if you lower your car and try to fit 18s on a civic, just something to keep in mind

he said he didnt care what we thought about the 18's so why respond with crap like this??

on a relevant note, when i lover mine, im prolly going to go with some eibachs(not sure how low yet) and prolly some kyb agx struts... if i do it any time soon ill let you know how it is... I'd definately get differnt struts when you lower it.

edit: i have 17's

you should definantely lower it if you have 18's. If you don't your car will look like a jacked up 4x4 jeep or something on those big wheels. Trust me...my car looked like it got jacked up even after just putting on my 15" wheels before I put my suspension on.

I honestly doubt there will be a huge difference in gas milage, but I don't drive it all that much anyway, so it's not a big deal. I saw these 18s on a civic and I really liked how they looked. So you guys think it isn't a good idea to just get a set of H&R springs or something like that? Maybe it will look fine without being lowered..

Assuming you have no desire to race:

Honestly, you will hate the 18's. If you think the car doesnt ride good now, it will be worse with 18's, no matter what suspension you have.
Take a look at 17's, the ride is better, and look at 17's especially if you want to drop the car.
When you go into 18's you cant lower it unless you flare the fenders out. Where 17's will allow a more agressive look.
As for a suspension, why go cheap on something as important as this? with the abuse it will take from 18's (veeeeeeeeeeeeeery bumpy and jittery) you really need to wait an extra week or two and get something good. Ground Control coils are awesome for the price. AGX or Tokico Illuminas will work great too, but if you can go a step further for Koni Yellows I say do it, you will not be disapointed, especially if you are going to run big wheels.

If you have any desire to race what so ever, at most run a 17, but look at 16s, again same suspension will be killer.

hope that helps. but from experience with many types of cars, big wheels are a big no in comfort and looks.

also, figure this: with 17s there is like a 2 1/2" gap between tire and well, with 18"s its just sad.

Yeah, I might wait and get some 17s. I want the ADR Mase (Racing Hart z5000 replicas) rims cause I love the style. I don't want to spend more than $600 to buy them though.

dont forget about strut tower bars for front and rear after you lower it, because it makes hella difference in handaling and you can get them hella cheap. ebay crappy strut bars are a great deal, just be sure to look for the best quality ones for the best price,

or if you want bling bling, go DC sports or some jdm types, good looks, but super high prices. im sure there better though. thats my .02

go with a coilover so you have an option of raising it a little if you have a rubbing problem. you might also want to worry about the offest of the wheels a little bit, they might rub without even being lowered.

IMHO you have no idea what IMHO means, and if you do, you have no idea how to use it in context. Good luck is a common phrase, not your opinion.

you can get some skunk2 coilovers and tokico blues for around the $500 range and they ride pretty good for the money....also when you lower your car go to a shop and get the TOE set to factory specs to reduce tire wear.....this is almost more beneficial than getting a camber kit from what i hear. the shitty thing about 18's is buying new tires.
