Default 2 way pager/starter/alarm

I'm in the market for a 2-way pager/starter/alarm. What are my choices? The only I know of is the compustar and it gets mixed reviews.

Mixed reveiws from an owner too

From what I hear the Viper 791 is very good. I might take out my compustar to put that in, as soon as I find someone that I can trust to do it right.

Clifford makes good ****, and a good rep to go with it.

What are the complaints with Compustar? Bbasso, what problems did you have?

Most of the headaches are from the VERY shitty install, and that has led to the failure of the alarm many times...

Overall I like the way it works and the range is far- but when it works...

I can't blame Compustar for any of the problems, well maybe cause apparently its a biotch to install and maybe the shop just did not know how when they said they knew.

I would reccomend it but ONLY if it can be installed 100% correctly.
and that seems hard to do.

I have the compustar myself. Had the old version in the EG....and have had the old and new versions in the ITR.

No complaints what so ever, its saved teh car about 3 times already.... range is awsome.

I can understand the complaint about shitty install...but i know the guy who installed mine, and he did an awsome job, took a long time but it was done nice. The brain is well hidden, no where visable, not under the steering column..all wires nicely wrapped so you cant tell what they are.

One of the better things i have purchased for the car.

I've gotta aladdin 2 way pager/starter and it works pretty well, the range varys depending on where i'm parked. Has some pretty cool features not sure if they're any better than any of the other brands but it works really nice, not to mention you get alotta, "is that a cell phone?!" from the ladies

isn't the compustar the only alarm that does remote start that can start the car SAFELY even if the car is in gear.

my friend used to have the compustar on his del sol and it even remote started with the Autolock on his clutch

the only thing with compustar, is that the spread spectrum models take a LONG time to respond, the FM is instant.....

experienced used that went from spread spectrum to FM

I just had this alarm installed a few weeks ago. It doesn't have remote start, but it's available on the higher end models. I'm quite happy with it so far.

nope, compustar won't remote start if the car is in gear. I had a compustar on my old 00 si. To remote start you have to follow the right sequence. When you are ready to turn the car off, keep/put it in neutral, pull the ebrake, turn the car off and pull the key out (the car wont turn off, a lot of people are freaked out by it) and then open your door, get out, shut the door, and the car turns off when the door shuts, automatically arms itself. If you don't follow the sequence it wont remote start, because of safety purposes. It is accident proof.

The compustar is a bitch to install, so go to someone who knows what they are doing. I took it to a place that does ferraris, bmw's etc and I got what I paid for (I paid a lot). Never had one problem with it. The only complaint I have is I dont like carrying the f'in remote in my pocket

Easy fix... I never lost it or damaged it this way and it gets reception all the time.

EDIT: I clip it to the belt loop on my jeans

I too have the Compustar and have had no problems. The range, even with the spread spectrum, is not as great as I had hoped, but is better than anything else I have seen.

I'm hesitant on getting a compustar because of the reliability issue. I have a trouble free alarm installed right now but it does not have paging or remote start (something I really want...bbrrrr...Canada).

I would recomend you buy a GP system and get it installed correctly. Wireless kill switches is also a great idea.

Another note, instalation is one of the most important aspects of any alarm.

Whats the range like on these newer models? So far it looks like its going to be a choice between the Viper 791XV, the Compustar 2WSS, or the Clifford (Not sure on which is their best model though. Matrix? Intelliguard?)

My main concern is the range being atleast 3-4 city blocks say from inside a garage to the inside of another building. I'm not familiar with the current features on these alarms so if my demands seem a little far-fetched don't be so hard on me . Thanks guys!

"atleast 3-4 city blocks say from inside a garage to the inside of another building"

Thats a tall order to fill...

Mine will work around one city block or from end to end. possibly 1.5-2 city blocks in a striaght line.
Also will work from a window veiw of a parking garage across the street when the car is near the tops floors.
Parking infront of a 18 story building and having it work in the elevator the whole way up and certain parts of the 18th floor.

To me thats very good, my fathers alarm if I can't read the license plate it does not reach...

Cool, thanks for the info man! Yeah, I know how your dad feels, mine is the same. Except I have to be able to read my VIN for mine to arm .

Anyone else have any info on these alarms??

According to the Viper alarm website, the 791XV starter is only for automatics
