I have a d17a2 with like 17k miles. I heard synchromesh does wonders for the transmission in terms of smooth shifting, eliminating grinding, etc. I have heard that the GM brand is the same as the Pennzoil - i have also heard the opposite, that u cannot use GM in non-GM products. Should I use synchromesh period? If so, is it alright to use GM brand?

I believe the normal syncromesh doesn't get rid of a whole lot of grinds, noises and such. It is the friction modified stuff you are looking for. I have also heard that pennzoil MAKES the stuff. However, I don't believe that they are the same things. I've read a whole lot of posts where people swear by this MTF, a lot more so than honda MTF.
