Hey everyone, my car's going in early next week to have the input bearing and clutch replaced... but I've also been given the opportunity to purchase a D-series LSD tranny for dirt cheap. My only concern is the fact that it is a used part and I don't know if it's been abused or not.

My question is: what would you do in my situation? I compete in a Solo2 series all summer, so I know I'd get good use out of the LSD-equipped tranny... but the fact that I don't know the history of how the tranny was used worries me.

Also, how much effort would it be to just take the differential itself and transplant it to the rest of my tranny? Would that be something to consider so that I can keep most of my original transmission in place? I'm kinda a noobie when it comes to anything concerning the transmission so your help would be appreciated.

wow i thought they only made lsd tranny for the jdm d15b

 

yea but it should bolt up to any other d series motor, if i were you id grab it up, im plannin a jdmd15b swap and for me to order one of those trannies they are on like a six month back order, u should grab it

 

if it is a place that you trust then do it.

there is always the possibility that something will happen, but if it is a good shop and you trust them, then that is all you can do. see if they will give you any kind of guarantee, i.e. it wont have any grinds and so on.

 

The work is being done through a shop I trust (he's a Honda Certified mechanic and uses only OEM parts) but the tranny is through a friend of a friend. That's what's bugging me. My car is my daily transportation and I can't afford to have problems with it and I'm not much of a risk-taker when it comes to parts.

Oh, and I know the tranny matches up... I'm runnning the stock D16Z6.

 

If you end up going for it, make sure you keep your existing tranny in case anything should go wrong...

yea, i guess it comes down to do you trust your friend, and does he say his friends i legit?

what is the price, that might give us a little better idea of if he is trying to scam you.

but hey if its a good price, you keep your tranny, and if worse comes to worse you do lose your money and you can still pay the bills, then i would go for it.

 

you should look up MISTABONE and i am sure he can answer all of your questions. i would probably buy the LSD tranny and you can tear it down to inspect it or just run it and see how it goes. either way i would suggest PMing mistabone with some questions and i am sure he can get you well on your way

mabeye if you could look at the tranny first. ie: check the fluid, and shavings inside etc.....

then againg if it is really dirt cheap. WTF go for it. you could always go back to your old d tranny...

 

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm waiting to inspect the tranny with my buddy, so we'll see what he and I think of it after that.

Now for another question: Am I being dumb replacing the clutch with another OEM one? Should I go aftermarket instead? I've been doing a little reading and some people are saying that OEM clutches are weak -- meanwhile, mine's lasted this long (180,000 km). Suggestions?
