Default Battery/Fuse/Dash Lights Electrical Problem

(Look a tech article in the EG+ Forum! haha)

Ok, so my car has been basically sitting in my driveway since the end of January. (License suspension) It's ocassionaly is started, driven around a little, but mostly just sits and idles every few days. Now, the problem.

My dash lights (console, climate controls go out but turn signals, stock shift light works) keep going out because the 7.5a fuse keeps on blowing. First we were driving and it blows randomlly. We pull over, replace it, it instantly blows when I put it in. Then that happens a second time. So finally I put a 20 fuse in there and it works. My friend goes WOT about 10 mins later and it blows when he shifts.

Since that fuse is blown, the warning light to turn my headlights off doesn't work. So we went into 7-11, my lights were left on for probably 10 minutes and my battery died. This shouldn't happen? I've had my radio on for hours before and the radio didn't die. Is it because the battery might not be fully charged/operational, even though the car was driven for about 30-40 mins. before this?

Car gets jumped, driven home, and my friend parks it crooked so I go to fix it and the battery is dead again. wtf? Will this problem get fixed once it's driven daily again?

I really want to know whats up with my dash lights...I'm guessing a bad connection or something with wiring. Just tryin to bring the tech back into the EG+ forum...

Check grounds, make sure there is good levels of water in your battery, if not replace it. Also make sure connections on your alternator and battery is good with no corrosion anywhere.

Did you do ANY wiring on it at all since this happened? Sounds to me like a wire is shorting out to make the fuse blow. What is that 7.5a fuse assigned to?

BTW, remove the 20a and refrain from putting bigger fuses in -- I highlyyy recommend you not do that, because that can lead and will into even bigger problems with melting wires, etc.

Keep us posted..

I encountered a similar situation. Check the bulbs from the tail lights. I had a bulb that had its base completely melted and was causing the system to keep blowing the 7.5 fuse under the dash. Replaced the melted bulb, and no more problems.

Have you installed an aftermarket radio, or taken the center console out? If so, you may have pinched the Cigarette lighter wire, and it's causing the fuse to blow. That circuit controls the gauges, cig. lighter, tails, etc.
It happened to me once.

remove all of your bulbs and check the base of all the bulbs ensuring that the contacts are making good contact.

yes I did about 2 months ago. Very possible that I pinched a wire. I'm going to look into this tomorrow if time permits.

3 radio wires were exposed, re-wired them, put some different butt connectors, taped them and carefully put the radio back in. Replaced the 7.5a fuse, works fine now. Hopefully it won't do it again.

thanks guys

no thats not the porblem guys i finally fixed that damn thing. Did you recently mess around with the dash board? or any components in it, like climate control and stuff like that, if you did then put a fuse in and start hittin the dash up top and watch for the fuse to go out. Im saying this because the fuse goes out evertime i hit a hard bump so i hit the dash on the top and found out that the fuse goes out when i hit the part above the climate control, so what i did is take that part off and there was a red wire that was crushed between the dash and the body of the car, and over time it wore the insulation off and everytime i hit a bump that wire touched the body causing it to short. Hope that help. "I have a teg though, i funno if civics are the same"
GOod luck

i had a similar problem. drove me crazy trying to fing the short. even with a shop manual, i could not find it. gave up and had an auto electric shop take care of it.

they found the short right behind the under dash fuse box. it was the meter fuse line.
