Default how to tell when your clutch is starting to go out?

my clutch doesnt seem like its gripping all that well. I just bought this car (98 honda civic ex) and it seems weak. Is that just the stock clutch being weak or is it going out? it still grabs every gear and doesnt grind, it just feels very soft and not right.

The test is to drive the car at like 5-10mph and then put it in 4th gear...if it stalls out, the clutch is good, if it revs up the clutch is slipping and is ready to go.

Also if you go to redline then shift hard into 2nd, you should feel the clutch slip if its going bad

i dont think that mph test will work will it? i have an ex tranny and it has really short gearing, i think it will not die just because of that. And it shifts into 2nd from redline fine..l..i guess its ok...

i still want to add a stage 1 clutch down the road sometime...any suggestions as to what brand to get? just looking for a good street / drag clutch

can also try driving in second gear at say 20-25 mph and apply the brakes moderatly while also giving it gas, kinda like power braking an auto trans. watch your rpm's, if your rpm increases while your speed remains the same the clutch is slipping.

my thoughts as well. i like the 4th gear method on stock cars, and the slam second method on higher performance cars.

put the car inforth or fifth gear and take off if the car stall within few second the your clutch is good and if the take off without stall then you need a new clutch.

I thought that fourth gear test was to see if your pressure plate was bad.
I know on my y8 tranny, i don't know if it was the clutch but when the car was cold i would engage 1st gear the car would chatter like a ****.

solved that problem with a act xt/ss.
Now my left leg hurts. lol!

well in cold weather right now, it kinda has a humming sound around 2-3k rpm's...idk what that is all about, but once it warms up its fine...

it is kinda a whiirr noise then when i let off the gas and the revs drop naturally it gets softer, but still whirrs.

I deff. can't chirp like before...I went from Avid H4's to Azenis.
Burnout? nah can't do that either. Those suckers grip.

Do what Bauley said, and get a new one anyway, it doesn't hurt.
Go with a ACT clutch kit, and you might as well get a lightweight flywheel while you're at it.

how much do shops usually charge to change clutchs and flywheels....or is it easy and you can do it yourself...

is there a walkthrough on here? or is it better to pay to have it done?

the last time I got a clutch/flywheel resurface done, it was around 300. Obviously I took them my own clutch and had the resurface the stock flywheel
