The ITR is one of the most awesome cars of our time
As a previous owner of 00ITR1405, I am proud to say the Type R in my opinion is one of the best cars around. I was forced to sell the car due to a move and regret it. I now own an STI. Yes the STI is faster, however I don't feel one with the car like I did with the ITR. I guess I just miss my ITR and needed to vent.

Thats why I still have mine.
My dad used to trade up to the newer mustangs every year back in the 60's and early 70's. Each year would have more HP. But he said the 65 was by far the best, and he always regretted not keeping it. I think the same is probably true of the ITR. Others may come out with more HP, but it may never be toped as far as a track car.

Why?
The STI is hands down the best performance-to-dollar car in the world. Way more durable than an evo and way better dealer service than Mitsu. You're a set of Tien RA's and a Vinshu flash away from a car that can humiliate modena's on a road course, all for less than $35K. Yet you still miss your ITR?

I've heard of the STi's having tranny problems actually. I'm sure it's just a common thing among high-power AWD cars, but it makes the tranny issues with the Evo irrelevant in a comparison between the two. However, I certainly can't speak from personal experience about either, as I'm broke as a bloke.

Hate to say it, but I agree. ITR is just getting too old to compete with the newer stuff out there. Id love to get my hands on an STi or EVO. Both cars are incredible in stock form.

Actually I'm friends with the guys at Rye Subaru, and the STI tranny has proven to be bulletproof so far. It came to us with a reputation for being able to handle 600-700hp WRC motors (although WRC cars actually use a sequential, air-shifted, beefed up version of it) and it's actually very stout. The fact that there are clueless kids driving STI's takes nothing away from the fact that it's truly an awesome machine.

I definately agree with your post above, i'm just stating what my friend had said about the STI's he has serviced. They are built to be abused, when maintained correctly.
For instance last week he called me when a 16 yr old kid towed his STI in the dealer w/ less than 5,000 miles on the ODO and a blown tranny. When they ripped it open besides bits and pieces of synchros motor oil came dripping out of the case
The kid later admitting to swapping the stock fluid after reading about it on some Subby web site.

I agree with O P, the hype surrounding the new AWD monsters on our shores is awesome launching potential. I think a majority of he people buying these cars are buying them with intention of drag/street racing. WRC cars might have put out high HP, but they arent usually out on friday night dropping the clutch at 6K rpm smoking all 4 tires at the local street races. Much of their abuse takes place on dirt which is more forgiving than pavement. Most of the EVO/DSM and WRX Ive seen around here break from launching.

RTW, DSM's and EVO's are nowhere nearly as stout as the STI. And the same applies to the base WRX. The STI is the only one of these cars that is dam'n near indestructible in mature hands.

I'm being serious here, but does the vinshu flash give the STI 10mph more in terms of trap speed? 360 Modena's seem to trap in the low teens which isn't THAT slow.
Do you think he is lying about wanting his Type-R again? He freaking sold it to buy an STI so for some reason I gather that he wanted an STI pretty bad and now isn't as excited about it.
Yes alot of people have "ITR blinders", but guess what a lot of people just plain have different tastes in cars and know what they like an don't. The fun factor of a car can be more important than overall speed. If the R is more fun to him than so be it, don't go around with some "I don't have an ITR owner complex so I'm special attitude" just to put people down.
Want a good example? Try a Miata. I bet there are PLENTY of people on this board that would say a Miata is far more fun to drive at the limit than an STI or most AWD cars for that matter. Just because its faster or produces faster times doesn't mean its always more enjoyable.
An ITR is lighter and will always have the ability to feel more nimble and its NA which EXCELLENT response (even for an NA). Maybe some people just like that better. If thats "ITR blindness" then I guess I have it as well.

Given that the exact same transmission has proven to be very stout in WRC Group-N competition in the prodrive cars, it is pretty apparent that any busted 6 speed is the result of some serious owner abuse and assclownery.

There are actual Ferrari owners in that thread claiming that they're gonna go out and buy an STI. Some already own one!

Bleh. I've raced Miatas and, while being a great handler, it wasn't more fun than driving more than any other car. In fact, the lack of hp really turned me off to picking up an SM.

Some people will like it better and for their own reasons. Personally, I still think the sti looks like stink. I'd still beat on it on a road course though.
