R1 for $12000?! Wow...someone got bent over and got ripped a new one. The R1 is a great bang-for-the-buck bike, but it's definitely not for beginners (or at least those that get ham-fisted with the fun-stick).

In the end, it's not about what bike you're riding or how much you spent - it's all about the rider.

I personally like my 7k F4i... I could upgrade to a 1000rr or 954 but whats the point, I won't get the extra use of the power and handling where I ride, nor am I experienced enough. Ducatis and race bikes are great, but they're better for the track which I, and most people will rarely or never see

IMO, I think the R! is one of the most under rated motorcycles out there. I don't know why alot of people are against them or don't even think about them as a choice. You always see in the magazines tests between GSX-R1000's, Honda's, and Ducati's. Where are the R1 comparison's? I really like Yamaha's. They are all around a well balanced motorcycle. Both the R6 and R1. Now I would have to agree that an R1 is definetly not a beginner's bike.
