Default V-AFC

Hey, I was just curious if you guys thought that this would be a worthwhile purchase. Right now I have the JUN ecu, and it is said to be tuned for my exact setup and elevation, octane, exhaust, type 3 cams, etc..... But when I had them tune it, I had them tune it for the JDM 4-1, and since then I have bought the JUN header, and also a larger tb. do you guys think that I would be able to fine tune some extra hp out of the car??? And do you think the extra hp would be worth the extra 300 bucks. Thanks.

Another question, slightly different. Can a V-AFC give you more power with a stock setup? Thanks.

I heard that the VAFC is too slow for the JUN ecu or something like that which make them don't work good together. Is it true?

I just think the VAFC is too slow in general, now that the availability of Hondata is rather pronounced!

FWIW, a lot of people have been having very good results when tuned properly....! Take a look at hondata's site and it just might convince you that piggyback devices just won't cut it when there is a better alternative!

the V-afc is different from hondata though, you cant compare the two.vafc is just a piggy back system while hondata is a complete engine management system where you chang out your whole ecu.

Until you can get a full Hondata system for $300 or less, I'll be keeping my V-AFC, thank you

As far as gains on a stock car, I doubt you'd see much. Maybe a hp or so somewhere - you would not be able to tell without dyno time. I would recommend this upgrade path -- intake, header, exhaust (if you want), then V-AFC. I was able to get 177whp out of my car with AEM CAI, JDM 4-1, 2.5" cat and the V-AFC. Moving the VTEC crossover gained a smoother plot, too.

That's pretty good, when you say 2.5" cat, you mean the actual cat converter right? Not a cat-back?

Right. 2.5" Jeg's cat. I'm still using the stock ITR b-pipe and can, but with the first restriction where it meets the cat cut out.

Even works fine like that with Spec B's

As mentioned, maybe somebody should take a look at the hondata site.....

here's an interesting plot. http://www.hondata.com/dyno97typer.html

I'd like to see a VAFC do that since it cannot adjust TIMING which is just as critical as fuel delivery.

A stage II system is all many of us will really need. We don't need it to see boost nor do we need to invest in the Stage 4 system to program it ourselves (though it would be very nice) Chances are, you are going to pay somebody to dyno tune your VAFC anyway so why not the same with a hondata?

The last time I saw a group buy for the VAFC it was 280USDshipped. Now it seems to have gone up to about 290USD (still no big deal) The Stage II is a whopping 55USD more at 345. So it is not shipped, and you still have to source a P28 or so to do it.

I guess I'm just saying for the added cost of the Stage II, I'm sure I can get better results in stock form and in whatever modded form I choose to go with in the future. It just has that much more tuning potential.....

As well, this is not to knock on anybody, but when you post your peak whp could you also please post your peak torque and where it peaked and how long it was able to hold this figure?

Ok, just breezed throught the Hondata site. I did not look in depth, so feel free to add comments as necessary.

1) $345 for Stage II + P28 ECU. How much are P28 ECU's going for? I know I don't have one handy.
2) Dealer tune or ROM editor. How much is the ROM editor? I would consider this essential, especially once one moves on past the usual bolt-ons (ie cams). For instance, I had to adjust my V-AFC just recently to account for weather changes (ie it's cold now, and my car was last dyno-tuned with Spec B's in May). How much would my friendly Hondata tuner have charged me for this adjustment?
3) I'm not knocking the Hondata unit. A more programmable ECU would rock. BUT. For the money, especially at a low level of modification, my choice is the V-AFC. It's cheaper and it's user-programmable.

[edit] Just saw this too. Adapter harness for OBDI ECU in ODBII car -- $250. Anyone else make those for less? [/edit]

As well, this is not to knock on anybody, but when you post your peak whp could you also please post your peak torque and where it peaked and how long it was able to hold this figure?
Enjoy!
