Main & Rod Bearings Re-use?
I have 2000 miles at the most on my newly built motor and I'm taking it all apart again for higher compression and some other goodies.
My questions is about re-using the main and rod bearings. They look good. They are all mostly the same dull silver color. The backs all look perfect. The only inperfections I see is on the inside. On some there are little shiny specs and shiny little scratches. On a few there are shiny patches near the edges. I take it that the parts that are shiny are worn a little. How much is too much? What kind of wear is typical? Too what point are they not re-usalbe? I'll try and take some pictures. I don't remember what I payed, so I might just buy a new set of 18.

If the bearings only had approximately 2000 miles on it, they couldn't be that bad. They are not like headgaskets, once you've compressed it, it's done. If they still look almost new, I'd throw them back in. Just my opinion....
I think I had a slightly low oil pressure issue though and they weren't getting the exact amount they normally do and thats why they are in the condition they are after 2000 miles.

with slightly low oil pressure i wouldnt even run the same bearings at all agian not even worth the semi risk even its its VERY slight..... but if the bearings looked new still then i would prolly run em agian

why take the risk... the motor is apart go ahead and put in a new set... so u know for sure that the bearings will not be an issue... just my thoughts.
100-250 for new bearings compared to:
750-1200 for a crank, 450-550 for rods, and 100-250 for new bearings
u make the choice!!!

Yeah, I'm not trying to be a cheap *** and cut corners on the build. I'm very particular about doing it right and myself. I don't think they are bad and could probably be re-used, but for peace of mind I'm going to get new ones. It looks like the slightly low oil pressure caused the shiny patches near the edges (lack of oil) compared to the middle.
every time i have torn my motor down i always replace all bearings and washers...just for safety, and its only a 100 bucks or so to replace em all
