so a smog ref wouldn't be able to tell it was really a 99 ecu being used on a 00 engine?

The actual componentry inside will be the same. There are no differences between those years IF it's from the same type of car (i.e.: automatic to automatic, 5-speed to 5-speed, etc).

If they were **** enough, they could probably trace the serial numbers on the ECU cover down to the exact year, but I doubt they would do that. A simple VIN number check would tell you from the motor.

99 ecu is obd2.1 while 00 ecu is obd2.2
i've been told that a smog ref might plug in a OBD device via the service connector but i dont know if that is right..if they do, it might show the differences.

for gen 3 integras, 94-95 is obd1, 96-99 is obd2.1 and 00-01 is obd2.2

00-01 is also when integras came with the key immobilizer.

thats why i made this post. to swap an engine into a civic legally, it has to be the same year or newer, ecu must be the same year as the motor, and the ecu must not have any cels and needs to be able to throw codes.

i can't use an '00 ecu because if i take out the immobilizer, the ecu will throw a code.

and now apparently i can't use a '99 ecu because there is a way to tell its not a '00.

time to kill myself... smog time is coming up too

any suggestions

The way I tell if an ecu is obd2A or obd2B is look at the plugs..... 92-95 civics and integras are obd 1, 96-98 civic/96-99 integra's are obd2 A, and 99-01 civic/00-01 integras are obd2B. If you have an obd2A ecu, it will have a gap inbetween the middle of the ecu. If its an obd2B ecu, it will have a gap/space on the left of the plugs....

Why would the ECU throw a code if you have the immobilizer removed?

i think it throws "internal ECU failure"

I'm not sure. I know of a couple of ITR swaps running around with original ECU's that were chipped and reprogrammed to eliminate the immobilizer. None of them throw codes.

eliminating the immobilizer on g3 ecus doesn't involve chipping or reprogramming.

I should have been more clear. They are both equipped with chipped/reprogrammed ECU's that have had the immobilizer removed, and neither ECU throws a code.
