How do you know if your car is burning oil?
If you are really burning up oil you'll see black smoke come out of your tail pipe with you get on it.
Black smoke = fuel
Light Blue smoke = oil
You can still burn oil without seeing either. If you are burning a lot of oil, you should see bluish smoke.
When I first got my car used, the previous owner abused it (I think he ran with filter off) and it burned a lot of oil, there was actually grains of sand on the pistons and scored cylinder walls to match. Oil residue on the bumper above the tailpipe was my first clue, and then a friend told me he saw blue smoke.
On my new motor, which I broke in pretty nicely, I don't see any smoke and still go through 1/2 - 3/4 quarts every oil change.
I too heard that our cars "just do."

I don't think you could smell it unless you could see it, but if you wanna take a toke on your tailpipe go right ahead.
Breaking a motor in properly means the piston rings will seat properly and give you a better seal
And result in:
Compression
Oilburning

You can burn oil off if the oil temp gets too hot too. Not sure if an oil overheating condition will make a lot of "smoke" though.
Flase? what's flase?

THnx teacher. If the oil were burned off because of heat, wouldn't the vapor end up back in the intake air? (PCV process) Then would it still smoke? I could be wrong. Seems to me like that wouldn't be enough oil to smell or see.
A good indicator for if you're burning oil is that you're missing some and there are no oil slicks on your driveway. Our cars do burn a fair bit of oil, but nothing like a 911 or anything. Just before I got my engine rebuilt at 260k kms I was burning about 1 litre every 3 or 4 thousand km. Not really that bad considering.
Next time you change your oil see how much you're down beforehand. While the car's upside down check for leaks. Errr, I mean when you're under the car check for leaks. Yeah...

thanks all of you.
Now the question is, how do you ensure the motor break in probably for the piston rings to seal probably??? and result in higher compression and low burning oil?
thanks

for a good break-in
does it mean not to engage VTEC for the first 1000mile is a good break-in?
or regularly change engine oil for the first few thousands miles?
please help me out.

I broke in my first engine by following the manual religously (aside from one street race) for the first 1000kms, then I did my first autocross at 1024. It lasted 260k. This time I was told to follow the manual PLUS I couldn't rev over 4k and I had to do it for 3k kms. He said it was because of the way he built the engine.
I'm at 2650kms on this engine so far... I'm starting to get a little excited...

My problem with burning oil in my ITR was a heavy right foot. It kept me in VTEC mode for all gears, but not in fifth because of traffic.
Got to love that VTEC cross over sound from the B18C5!

I like my method if you take a long turn pretty fast and v-tec cuts outs you are low..so I then go home and check the stick.I burn about a quart every 1,200 miles.
why not? all the small metal pieces are shaving your brand new engine...
Don't tell me those bullshit thing about "honda put special oil to help breaking-in the engine"
