Car having starting problems
Well my teg is having some starting problems. Most of the time I turn the key and nothing happens, just a click. If I keep on trying and turn the key fast twice in a row it starts. Some people reccomended me a new battery but that didn't change anything. So now I'm wondering what the problem is? Starter? Alternator? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks man. It actually started right up today but who knows. There is definitley something wrong.
Can I check to see if it is the starter?
Where exactly is the starter?
Is it easy to replace?
Thanks guys.

I had the same problem, it would click 3 +/- times and wouldnt start and sometimes did start. It started on some days, others it wouldnt, it got so bad that it wouldnt start at all. I took out the alternator 3 times before i found out what it was. It was the Negative battery cable, it was corroded. Get some jumper cables and ground the negative post on the battery either to another negative post on a battery, or on to the engine mount/block, and start the car. If it works, that is what it is.

I'm going to second the grounding problem suggestion, also check the connection between the battery and the starter. I used to have the same problem on my truck when I used to do some off-roading, the possitive connection at the starter had gotten wet and become coroded.
From your description, I highly recommend replacing the starter.
To test if it is the starter, you can take a solid object and slightly bang on the outside of the starter. What this will do is break loose some dust inside the starter and you may be able to crank it. But this is not recommended as a replacement. Just a diagnostic. You'll need a replacement starter.

Other things that I would recommend checking is the electrical contacts for corrosion or loose connection. I would also check the Main Relay under the driver side dash.

Len, you sure you work in a parts dept?
Main relay won't do that.
If it is a Nippondenso starter (which it usually is, you can tell because the solenoid has a square end plate) you can take the end cover off the solenoid and replace the two contacts to the plunger. They are dirt cheap, and this is 95% of the time the ONLY part that goes in these starters. If you have the starter out, it only takes about 10 mins to change them.
Most Honda techs know about this.....
And banging on the starter is not always a good idea. Some starters are made with permanent magnets and will be destroyed if you hit them with a hammer. Just make sure it isn't a perm. magnet type before you hit it, if you are not sure, don't.

You can't tell by some of my responses? I gather what I can from the techs, but in no way shape or form am I a trained technician. I usually like to point the person in the right direction. Which in this incident and from another one, you've already established the fact that I'm no trained tech.
