Default hard to get in every gear!

i searched around but found no definite answer to my problem. as of lately, it's getting harder to put it in and out of every gear of my tranny. and just tonight it's gotten so bad that the only way i can upshift or downshift is if i let the revs fall down to idle, then put it in gear. if i shift at say 3000 rpm and it falls to around say 2500 for the next gear, it won't go in... but if i let it fall anywhere lower than around 1500 i can cram it into gear. the clutch does not slip and has about 1" freeplay in the beginning of the pedal travel.

anybody know what's going on? i really need to get it fixed; it's my daily driver.

not to jack the thread, but what does the freeplay mean. I have it too. Can you get rid of it by adjusting.

Your clutch is toast. If you need a cheap one, I got an extra OEM one that I can sell cheap. But yeah, your clutch is toast, if it wont go in gear that means its life is coming to a quick end

freeplay is the amount of pedal travel before clutch is disengaged. one inch is average and is also necessary ( not necessarily an inch but must be within spec) or you will have a lot of problems such as hard shifting or clutch not fully disengaging

i just changed the fluid so it's not that...someone said it may be the clutch cable but the clutch has about 110,000 miles on it so more than likely it's the clutch? i don't think it's the slave cylinder b/c in past experiences when i've had the slave cylinder go bad, i've also lost clutch pressure...sometimes you have to pull the clutch off the floor it's so bad..i could be wrong on hondas though.

NXLude do you have the whole clutch kit with throwout bearing, pressure plate, etc. or just the clutch? i'm looking for the whole assembly.

also, what do you guys recommend i replace while i'm under there? i'm really short of money but i don't wanna have to open it up again later on because i missed something? it kind of shakes a bit when i start off from a dead stop so should i have the flywheel resurfaced? anybody have a good estimate on how much this will cost?

well its definatly NOT the clutch cable because you dont have one. you tranny is hydralic not cable driven.

its probably not the master or slave cylinder because you would be losing pressure and it would be 'sticking' to the floor

since you have about 110k miles on the clutch i would say it is that and you said that it shakes when you start out which is another indication that its the clutch itself

as for things to do when you replace the clutch....replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and resurface the flywheel

David

It would be a good idea to have your shift linkage checked before dropping a lot of money on a new clutch. As well as all of the hydraulic componants for the clutch.

duh! i should have known it's hydraulic..i'm a moron sometimes! anyway, i'm really busy (midterms in school) so i won't be able to check the linkage so i'll have to take it to a garage. any ideas on costs for all this stuff? any recommendations on clutches also? should i stick with oem or something a little stronger?

update: the mechanic looked at the car. he said the clutch isn't slipping and seems to be actuating so he thinks the clutch is ok...he thinks it's something in the transmission itself. he won't rebuild it personally...what should i do? look for a used tranny? rebuild the old one? what's the cheapest?

yeah the only way it could be the clutch would be if a spring popped out and is jammed in there. Otherwise when a clutch goes the car doesn't. I shouldn't change the shifting at all. Think about it... the clutch is the only part that is connected to the tranny. If it is not grabbing onto anything then it will just spin freely.

I am guessing you bent your shift fork. Might be able to get a tranny for a couple hundred. If your short on cash you could look at getting a H23 tranny. They seem to sell for less. Check the FS/WTB thread...

When you do put the new tranny on or fix the old, as every has said resurface the flywheel and while you are in there already I would replace the rear main. It's like $15 from Honda and IMO well worth changing while you have everything apart. Takes like 10 more minutes.

well, i'm running an h23 tranny now and the more i drive it, the more it seems that it's ALL of the synchro's going...as weird as that may seem. i'm gonna run it till it dies and i found the only h23 tranny in my area for $300. sound like a good price? how much does resurfacing the flywheel cost?

I'm not sure exactly how much it costs to resurface a flywheel. When I did my clutch I bought a new one. I wouldn't think it would be more than like $30....
